Hi, Just wanting some advice. Got a chap coming round tommorow to look at doing some welding on my project Hillman Imp. Will need 4 x arches, 2 x outer sills, all 4 corners of the car, door bottoms, couple of other areas of blistering. Sounds bad i know but its actualy not a bad car. Floorpan and inner sills all solid, its just general Imp stuff. But how much should this cost? Obviously, I know it depends on 100 different factors, might be other rust etc, but what sort of ball park figure are we looking at? I don't know what I should consider to be an OK price, £500 or £1500? Any help appreciated, Also, if your in Cheshire taking on welding projects, PM me

Just remember that neither the cheapest nor the dearest means you will get poor or brilliant work. Best if you can decided who to do the work based on recommendations of satisfied customers and if possible seeing examples of the quality of their work.

Not sure on cost but if he's fitting arches and sills make sure he's going to cut out the rusty originals and not just slap the repair sections on, this is what i got when i contracted a Mobile welder back in the 90's, funnily enough that was an Imp too needing much the same work. Imp sills have three sections and are quite involved to repair properly, cover sills will pass an MOT but that's not restoring a car properly.

I have seen a lot of work done by a mate that can weld and i have had to cut off and sort it out

Shame youre not friendly with a garage (always get to know a good garage!) I had my Camaro welded up pretty much front to end floor pans valances boot you name it, but helping cut the metal to shape and being a dogsbody for a weekend sweeping up taking phone calls - got it all done for £200 quid And several kebab meat n chips!

learn to weld. do an evening course, buy yourself a half decent hobby welder and with a bit of practice, patience, and persistence you can do it yourself and get it done how you want. all for a lot less than £1000, plus you`ll have a skill for life.

I'm with anyone who says give it a go... i bought a £200 welder and about £100 in masks and gas. Got some scrap metal and played, got there in the end after welding a mini I would say I'm comfortable welding now... not the best looking welds, but even and strong with good penetration.
Welding is probably one of the best things I have learnt in the last few years.
