...well most of the other daft questions. This really is rudamentary schoolboy stuff and I'm embaressed to ask but I'm having a mental block. Car looses all power when second choke kicks in, carb is clean, float levels spot on, had all the jets out and cleaned, blasted cleaner down the pipes. More than likely need to adjust mixture (scew has a tendancy to move on its own) but am I more likely to be getting too much air or flooding with too much fuel? (not smelling anything but have a blocked nose anyway) Go on, put me out of my misery then point and laugh!

Sounds like too much air, not fuel. Are the jets for the second choke blocked, so it is running on 2x air and 1x fuel?

My car did that too, so I changed to Twin SU's from a Single 2BBL...
Wait.. that doesn't help you...
Maybe it's an option? ;D

too much fuel will cause it to bog worse than too much air IME. Suddenly going lean can also cause pinking. Does it pink or just stumble?
Also check your distributor, failure to advance can cause a stumble when you whack the pedal to the metal. Check both vacuum and mechanical advance are operating freely.
Also also check the secondary choke is actually openning...

Distributor? What's one of them?! (Sorry, 2CVs don't have anything that complicated!)
Could be timing though - if it isn't quite firing in the right place, booting it would highlight a problem. Is it on 123 ignition?

Is it on 123 ignition? It is on electronic ignition yes, timing strobe out tomorrow then! akku, no pinking, carb mechanics 'seem' ok, may whack one of my spare carbs on tomorrow and see how it goes. I shall post back if and when I solve it! Cheers guys, Mick.

Long shot this but ...
The fuel tank system on a 2CV is 'Open vent system' (simlar to many old british motorcycles), in other words if your fuel cap vent hole is blocked (tiny little hole in the cap) from dirt or polish ( or if you've recently fitted another type fuel cap?) then the tank can't 'vent' and thus the fuel system can't 'suck' so to speak.
Used to happen a lot with British motorcycles in the 60's
