Now, there's no way I could ever find an identical 190 to replace my written off minter, as it had SUCH a detailed history, nice spec, low miles and was in PERFECT condition. So at the moment, I don't want another Merc (maybe in a few years when I've moved house to somewhere with a driveway I'll spend several thousand on a fantastic one again).
But do I replace it with something old and interesting, or just go modernish for a few years?
If I buy something, it will live outside on the road in all weathers. It must be capable of daily use, be reliable, easy to get bits for, reasonably roomy, not need welding or major work (no driveway or equipment), ideally have a bit of oomph or make a nice noise, and importantly, it must be unusual or different.
Thoughts at the moment include:
A beach buggy or sand rail
A Scimitar GTE
A Yank tank
A Yank van
An old Landie
A Corrado
A MK1 Golf Cabrio
Any more suggestions or thoughts? The budget will be around £2-3000..

I've been loving my daily mk4 Cortina estate (ghia) - probably won't seem as quality as your merc but it's like luxury to me - 2.0 pinto feels a little underpowered but a few cheap mods would fix that

Corrado would give the least grief out f that shortlist for the budget. As would a 2.8 Capri...

Any Landy from before about 1998 (pre TD5) will need to be in a rolling maintenance scheme.
Like the Forth Road Bridge - once you get to one end you go back to the other and start again!!

Really sorry to hear about your Merc. But I suggest that you jump right in again to a classic. Maybe not a merc if that's not what you fancy but at least something interesting that'll give you a reason to get over the old one. At the end of the day, we can't mothball our classics if we intend to use them. I drive some nice old cars around - sure sometimes I worry about them (occasionally they even get vandalized) but what am I going to do? Lock them up and only take them out on Sundays? I like the look of your list, good choices in there. I think I'll vote for a yank tank though. May as well do it now whilst petrol is cheap  |

Interesting and different you say? Your budget would get you an absolute minter of a DAF. Parts aren't as hard to find as you'd think if you have the right contacts.

Although I like DAF's, they're just physically too small and rather underpowered for me... That Caprice is pretty awesome, eh  |

That's cool, and not that far from me either, but a knocking/rattling engine (an engine we didn't get in the UK) and the fact it's not taxed/tested/on the road puts me off... |

Whilst i really want you to get a yank tank, i have to suggest this - what about a V8 Range Rover, then you get the noise of that V8 but also the practicality of a 4x4
|

I'd have to disagree with Pandaselecta - DO NOT touch a Range Rover... Been there, spent a fortune keeping it running  and it was only 84k genuine miles with full RSRE history on a manual 3.9efi. Now gone to another mug home ;D. I do understand how you feel about the 190 - I sold mine after getting it back from bodyshop (untaxed / no mot driver hit me when parked) £3500 + repairs on a 1986 2.3 Cosworth and looked perfect! BUT it felt like she'd been raped... and I was running a Mosselmann Turbo setup (around 300bhp - a little up on std ;D). Really miss giving it a big boot (but not in the wet - much ) Personally, I'd go Yank - remember, you can never have too much horsepower! Good Luck |

Shame about the W201, such a nice car. It did deserve an happier ending.
My suggestion is Alfa 155/156/164/166 V6.
These would be reliable enough for a daily, but they are a bit special. Not yank special, but certainly Corrado special.
Is it still possible to get a tidy SD1 Vitesse for that money? Because I sense a preference for RWD.
Otherwise how about a Nissan 300ZX?

Mmmm.... FD wagon - should have kept it!!! Alfa? A nice Sud or a GTV maybe... SD1 is a possibility - I've had plenty in the past. The Yank idea appeals LOADS, though I'm obviously not even gonna get near the 190's 22mpg round MK! A 2.4 Laurel would be nice An MX5 would be perfect if it had two more seats lol. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try a Jag or not... |
