Right it's time to do something different! I haven't got the funds to get a respray etc on my mk2 breadvan. I'm thinking of stripping all the paint on the outside and keeping it bare metal. It it a case of stripping it well, degreasing etc then lots of clear coats or not bothering with the laquer and using lots of quality hard wax?! I'm clueless with this. Ideas and tips please!

Why? The car won't last, go for it if you want to weigh it in at the end of the fun. Paint is there for a reason, to look nice and protect the metal :-\

It needs a couple of repairs etc and a respray, totalling 2k. I have my 340 which needs some light restorative works so would rather the funds go there. Surely this would last with consistent maintenance? Ie rubbing down surface rust etc and rewaxing/coating the surface.

Brush/roller it with rustoleum? Or cheap rattle cans? Entirely rusty cars look okay but they don't last at all

He never said anything about rust I like the idea. clearcoat always seems to either not keep the water out, or turn yellowy. I'd be tempted to use a tough hard-wax. Something like mould release wax could be a good bet, as it's cheap for the quality/toughness of it. Sounds like a cool idea by the way, just keep it shiny metal, not such a fan of the forced rust stuff.

mk2 polos can rust quite slowly, it seems that bare steel rusts slower that steel thats going rusty under damaged paint, as that will trap water and moisture. if you do go back to bare metal and want to coat it with wax/lacquer etc to protect it, remember that the finish of the steel will show through, as will any rust and previous dents and accident damage.

bit of a crazy idea, but i'd try wiping the bare metal over with something like danish oil (it is meant for bare wood, but having accidentally got some on our kitchen sink at home whilst doing our worktops, i can confirm it sticks to metal, like poo to a blanket!) it isnt totally clear, but if you coat it thin enough, it should appear fairly clear. it leaves a thin waxy skin, that water won't get through. thinners is about the only thing i've found to remove it. it would be a fairly cheap way of protecting the bare metal. www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l2736&_nkw=danish+oil
