It's nearly paint time for the Mini, and I can't decide what to spray it in.
I'm thinking of using a zinc phosphate primer and then top costing with enamel.
A friend says cellulose primer and topcoat will get a better more durable finish, because enamel is too 'hard'
Any comments?

cellulose is polishable and will polish up nice and easy to correct mistakes , but isnt the best lasting ,
2k is far better and more durable if its a car you want to keep,.

I don't have an oven or an air fed mask.

I'd go for celly mate. As Rodney said, it's very forgiving and you can flat and polish it up nicely. It's not as tough as 2k but if you keep on top of it and look after it, it'll last OK.

celly all day long. both my old cars were painted in celly from the factory and both are still presentable. most people don't believe the paint on my polo is 21 years old it is that good. A lot of it is in the looking after though. my polo has been waxed on a regular basis from the day it was built. my mx5 is still in good nick too. neglect it though and it will fade. it can also scratch and chip easier than 2k paint, but at least it won't kill you as quick as 2k used without correct ppe

2k is much more durable but less forgiving,i prefer cellulose as i don't like that plasticky look you get with 2k.thats just me tho.

you can get away with out a air mask with celly , use a throw away dust masy and go out side and open a door between coats , 2k will knock your block off without a decent mask,.
