After a little persuasion, it is probably time a thread was started on how I came to acquire this car come February time.
I knew quite a while ago that I would return to Porsche ownership (well, to a frontrunner) at one point or another. I never realised it would be so soon!
This thread starts with my flirtation with a number of BL stuff. From selling the Sprint it seemed that owning simply one British car from the 70s was not enough! Maybe I simply needed to own the cars I fancied owning at some point.
From going from two fairly sorted cars (A Dolly Sprint and a Spitfire 1500) I thought I had settled on a Mini. A cliche choice I know but I wanted one since I first started to drive and sure enough after bagging this car it did not disappoint. Despite its lowly 998 City E guise and Northants Saints paint job it had many plus points including a solid chassis (it had newish subframes along with sills and floors) with a new brake system being the icing on the cake. Great I thought. A car that is cheap to run, and bundles of fun in addition to being reliable (It became more a daily when my modern was not being a workhorse for once!).
And so I started my acquisition of many a part to make it a little more fun (Superflex bushes for a few key areas, a Maniflow LCB along with an RC40 Twin Box system etc. etc.) Standard issue stuff I admit but every little helps. Pleased as punch you could say I was.
How could this all change? Quite easily with fate intervening! A friend of mine informed me of a 944 Turbo which was tidy and had a spec to match. Damn, damn, and damn again! My idyllic choice of classics was threatened! Logic soon went out of the window, and before I knew it, I became the owner of a rather fancy 944 and him the owner of my Mini!
Enough of the waffle, its picture time!:
There is nothing too exciting under the bonnet but it does pull rather well!:
So, what is the lowdown with the car? Well, it has had some familiar chaps in the 944 retail sector own it and as such it has a number of goodies present. These include KW V3 Coilovers which have been setup/corner weighted with the chassis also benefiting from 968 Caster mounts, possibly 968 MO30 ARBs, poly bushes in some places along with Michelins all round. One thing is for sure. It grips significantly better than previous 944s I remember! Certainly more than enough for the road! Probably the feature of this car dare I say!
To hold it back it does have 928 GTS brakes (Big Blacks). The engine specification is unknown for now, although it does have a rebuilt cylinder head along with a Bailey DV30 dump valve. I am fairly sure that it has the ProMax turbo chips. A feature my friends enjoy playing with is the Wortec exhaust system complete with electronically switchable exhaust valve to go from slightly loud to fairly loud! It is certainly great for confusing people, and well, acting a little outlandish when you feel the need .
What are the plans for this? For now they are to simply sort out a couple of minor issues (clock display (ebay will be my friend there), door check strap (surprisingly cheap :/)) and just simply driving it!
The other plan? Well, to keep my licence intact (the boost may have caught me out when I first bought it!), and well, to stay on the road (literally!), and well, to enjoy!
Not one of my usual threads where I fix cars but well, I guess it is retro(ish).
Spec As of Now:
Engine: A stock Turbo 2.5 with Chips, and boost altered to 14PSI. Lindsey Racing Stage 1 Intercooler, Bailey DV30 recirculation valve, along with a Wortec switchable exhaust. Dyno'd at 283BHP.
Chasssis: KW v3 Coilover suspension corner weighted. 968 MO30 ARBs with 968 castor mounts. 17" Cup 1 alloy wheels on Michelin Pilot tyres.
Brakes: 926 GTS 'Big Black' Brakes up front, with 964 calipers on the rear.
