Right, as my car has no head room, i'm looking to get another one. My check list is along these lines: 4x4 Deisil maybe a pick up tow hitch hard as funk Groovy I've got my retro car, so i'm looking for summit i can get parts in, tow stuff, slight pimpability, reliable. Summit i don;t have to worry about so all my spear cash can just flow ointo the sled. some thoughts: ...so think 4x4, lights, bull bars and cheap ;D

Mk1 Isuzu Troopers are cheap. Because they are dreadful. I'd avoid!
Patrols are often over-looked because everyone wants a Toyota. Sensible money goes on the Nissan.
Land Rovers do not appear to be cheap.

HiLux. Look nails hard, run forever. A land rover WILL eat all of your money and give you a bad back.

Daihatsu Fourtraks are cheap, but a bit cramped.
Toyotas seem evergreen in the popularity stakes, so values remain high as Dollywobbler says.
Land Rovers are almost obscenely overpriced (4x4 Scene tax anyone??), except 80's Range Rovers which are cheap....but the standard VM diesel is, erm.......not very good.
That leaves Nissans, unless you fancy a Range Rover with a Nissan diesel in it (whistles innocently)

right, i grew up abroad so had a lot of 4x4's. - Isuzu Trooper - worse than bad, rear wheel overtook up once. - Land Rover - my first car, but as said, too much money for an uncomfortable car, (but the best off road in my eyes) - Disco - Far too wallowy, and too new - Range Rover - Would love one, but all seem to be rusted to curse word - Nissan Patrol - Great car, simple and groovy, external diff locks - Nissan patrol SWB - Probably my favorite we've ever owned, but few and far between over here. - Jeep Cherokee - Didn;t really like at all - Chevy Blazer - LHD and huge, so not sensible Now, never owned a Hilux, but i've head nothing but good things, and the fact i'm after a pick up too, it seemed to me like a sensible choice, but i just wanted it seconded.

I would suggest you try and find the VW Taro badged version of the 4x4 Hilux for extra retro oddity coolness points
