Read this in a couple of the papers today. You know all about that petition against the pay-per-mile road tax? well, no doubt you will have seen the emails going round urging people to sign it claiming that the government are proposing a vehicle tracking database incorporated into the pay-per-mile scheme which will automatically send out speeding fines and be able to tell the cops where you were at any point during the day etc. A Downing Street spokesperson told a news conference late yesterday that these are "ridiculous lies" and that many people were signing the petition under "false pretenses". Therefor the fact that over a million people have signed it is immaterial as its impossible to say how many people are protesting against pay-per-mile and how many are against the idea of a tracking database which is not a government proposal. So all those signatures can be easily ignored. And those idiots adding wild unsubstaniated claims about civil liberty infringements just played right into the governments hands. Now it can implement pay-per-mile happily saying there is no proof of public opinion against the scheme.... Moral of the story - if you want to fight government stick to the fancy knives, black coats and Guy Fawkes masks Fixed it fer yer ;D Gee, i think i should ease up on the V for Vendetta watching...

i didnt sign in the first place.
All these petitions appearing every five minutes are tosh.
if the government listened to the people, we would have a better health service, better schools , better roads, less supermarkets, less take away food outlets, and above all - lees spending on 'defence' - so they plainly don't and only appear to listen when they want another 1825 days, at our expense.
most of the crackpot schemes circling the media used to be blamed on europe, now theres a centre right euro labour government, the ultra right wing shisters in fleet street blame tony's cronys.
we must all learn not to trust the press.

OK, some better news this morning. Douglas Alexander has obviously spent the weekend slowly rotating...
Some delightful quotes from our beloved Minister for Transport this morning. I missed his interview but heard the report on it. Apparently he said that "public opinion cannot be ignored" and said that the proposals would be "scrapped if the public cannot see the benefit in them".
If seems Government Policy is like the weather, you don't like what there is today, wait to tomorrow... What ever happened to The Lady's Not For Turning LOL. Anyone would think they had a shrinking majority or something...
I'd say that looked like a change of tune and score one to us.
However I still say we cannot ignore any formal consultation when it is published. Some warm words over the weekend isn't going to be a lasting position....

Different sources. Sunday's papers were quoting a Downing STreet spinmeister who's name illudes me.
Anyway all theat 99% of them seem to care about whipping up at the moment is whether David "Dave" Cammeron smoked a joint when he was 16 like 30 years ago. Most annoying when you are trying to find some actual real news!

Not 100% sure of the self regulation of congestion but there's a lot of good stuff there. all these points look well thought out. IMO its well worth having a voice and using it, all helps teh people putting a lot of effort into explaining why these ideas are stupid. And the politician may of said hyped emails may have generated a few extra signatures. So long as the whole thing has not been ignored thats whats important. Back to the drawing board there is a better solution, like we have said before the running out of oils should slow things down a bit...

Perhaps a mod or admin could change the name of this thread to something more reflective of how the news has moved...

I like how all the reports about the petition say "over a million" when I last tooked it was over 2 million. And that was before the report.
So, while still factually correct, the government propaganda, sorry regulated news services, spin down how unpopular the plan would be.
I think the solution needs to be, everyone buy positive earth car. At best, the fitted box won't do anything. At worst it will fry the circuits, but hey you complied, and anymore they fit will just do the same.
