My Starlet is getting tatty & needs the front wings sorting, one rear arch sorting & spraying. It's metalic gold & I can't afford for a bodyshop to do the work, so I'm thinking of doing it myself. Fitting new/repairing the wings I can do, rear arch I can get sorted in it's beyond me, but the painting bit I'm not sure on. I've got a compressor, water trap & spray gun. A mate says he's got some B/A I can borrow. Is it something I should do myself, or wait until I can afford for the pro's to do it?

Is it as hard as people make it out to be? I'm not looking for a show car finish, just want to make her look a bit more respectable & keep her the right colour if I can

all in the prep dude, just start with a low grit and work up to the finer stuff, that'll key in the paint so the new stuff will take. Once you got it all straight, then lay some primer on, flat that off exactly the same, say a 150, 300, 600, do that a couple of times to build it up, then final coat, colour sand that in with a real fine grit, say start on an 800 then 1200 and a 1500 with some water, should come up reaaal nice, this is for a straight colour I'm not sure on metallics though, you might hav eto lacquer it and the mettallic could dogs cock it all, never sprayed it myself, straight colours is a piece of curse word though, just be patient, mask everything up well, nothing worse that overspray on tyres, yuck!

Give me a shout when you're ready I'll pop up if you like. Just make sure the kettle's on. I've done a few cars over the years.
Problem is matching old metallic paint and gold is a beeatch anyway. You may be best to try get the new paint matched to the old rather than using the colour code on the car. Even then applicatation technique varies the tone of the colour. Depends how precious you are about the car. For a series of repairs the only way without a lot of expertise it to spray the whole car really. Depends how good you need it to be.
You don't sand the metallic basecoat, just the primer and the clear/lacquer.
