which is the best? which is the lightest? Which is the easiest to get hold of?
Plans are still open for the Sapporo...

how much power do you want? how much do you want to spend? 3.9 efi`s still come up regularly out of range rovers, carb fed 3.5`s are getting a little bit rarer. The 4.0 and 4.6 are newer, the 4.0 is basically the old 3.9 but with a few different items but still the same capacity , the 4.6 is a brute out of the box. I havent forgotted the 4.2.. but its a rare one as it was only fitted to the LSE classic range rover. I don't think there is that much weight difference between all of the engines to be honest. You can do alot with any of the engines, the only restriction being your wallet.. www.v8.com

I know where there's a 3.5 out of a Rover P6 if you were after one (I think it's still around anyway )

is it true the rover units are the lightest ones?

All the Rover V8`s are of an all aluminium construction, including the engine they where originally the Buick 215ci. All the engines I have listed are Rover. The TVR/Rover V8 is aluminium as well.
Be carefull looking at "older" engines from P5B`s and P6`s as they generally don't have hardened valve seats.
even the defunct "preject iceberg" V8 diesel turbo was all aluminium..

As far as I know the units from the P6 have the most compact ancillaries, and so lend themselves to being shoehorned into other machines. That's not to say that you can't change the ancilleries on a Range Rover "Thor" V8 for P6 ones (I'm not sure if you can or can't). But P6's came with the original 3.5 litre carb-fed V8 (depends what you were after I suppose!) There is stacks of info out there (both real and virtual) about these engines, which makes them really nice to work on and use as you always know that there's someone that'll know the answer to your questions. Also parts are easily sourced and there's a well established tuning scene. For those reasons the Rover V8 can't be beat (in the UK at any rate!)

The "THOR" aka 4.6 has a major problem, in that the liners can and do move, resulting in massive coolant loss, which usually ends up having to have a new block being required. So if you get your hands on a 4.6 its well worth stripping to check it over.

If a rebuild was order then I think there's a specialist by the name of V8 Developments who can make you a Rover V8 engine to suit, in any spec from P5 spec 3.5 to 5 litre full race tune. I'm sure they featured in Practical Classics ages ago, but I'm not sure of their address.

It's a really nice engine - a real classic! They did a feature on Top Gear not so long ago, as they had just ended production of it after umpteen years . I think on the programme they mentioned that it was due to the all aluminium construction that the yanks binned it - they thought it was too way-out and may be unreliable. I think the standard 3.5 gives 150bhp - not that much for a V8 IMHO, but hey, there's stacks of tunability there and like igbandy says, the only limitation is your wallet! The only reason I wouldn't choose one for a transplant is that it's been fitted into pretty much every engine bay imaginable from big Mercs to Mini's (transversely!!), and I quite like doing stuff that has never been attempted before. That said, I doubt anyone has fitted one into a Sapporo before!! ;D

When your talking about base model rover V8s you cant really compare HP figures. Its the torque that makes it go. My only experince with them was my dad owned a factory MGB GT V8 several years ago. Went really well and had the best engine note, but itd been in scotland most of its life and the paint was about the only thing holding it together
