Just come in after spending much of the day on the Chysler. The ring finger on my right hand now doesn't bend. Had one of those "extreme pain followed by latex glove slowly tuning red" as it fills with blood moments. Time to call it a day for today then. So far I have started with this.... a huge mass of pipes with the intent of removing all the ECU, computer carb, distributor, intake, EGR, recirculation system, cat pre-heater, altitude compensator and all that junk. Oh, and making the thing actually run. Diddiest carb on a V8 evAh?? I did try refurbishing the carb (as this is the reason it doesn;t run) but stuf like this makes me realise that its a stupid POS carb Theres more wiring just on the carb than there is on a whole Morris Minor.... Andway so lets start pulling it to bits (after spending (wasting) some wad on trying to fix the original equipment...) Stuff coming off now, am I the only one looking at the now redundant A.I.R. pump braket and thinkng "supercharger" Still a ton of junk to remove. And I still haven't got down to the inlet manifold yet. The only problem with fixing a car thats been rained and snowed on is that your crotchis rubbing against cold wet metal as you bend over the front wings. Been at it ten minutes and it was like I'd peed my pants in a freezer. Niiiiiice. After about 5 hours I realised the last half hour had been about 2 minutes work and about 28 minutes of me staring at it wishing my hand didn't ring with pain and wishing it would do a Christine and fix itself, wondering why a dicky carburetor had lead to me dismantling the air conditioning system (and wondering if the later will ever work again). Time to go inside then and warm up my icy wet wedding tackle in front of the fire.... This is how much junk is now off I'm about half way I reckon. SWMBO muttered something about "getting another car while that ones being fixed".... Hmmmm.... Thought that was herresy round here. Not defeated, but now agreeing with Em, it was a damn dumb choice of winter daily driver. Hah, I live and (never) learn.

I thought that's what everyone does. Goes to try and fix their cars, fails a bit, throws stuff at culprit then goes out to get another car. Anyhoo good to see you're making some progress on it. You'll make a french-like surrender monkey out that '5 yet.

Surprised that something that complicated worked properly in the first place to be honest I pity the guy who had to put em together at the factory. What is all that emissions junk being replaced with? A holley or similar? At least you will have saved a bit of weight! Not that you will notice on a yank tank

It always amazes me, they put 99% of the stuff in place to do a proper EFI and yet went with a computer controlled carb and distributor combo! The replacement stuff is Holley 600 carb, its a 4150 with the electric choke, one of several Holleys in my attic for some reason... Edelbrock performer inlet manifold, just picked up from a chap in the Mopar club AlistairK in "using new parts shocker!" Edelbrock air filter and one of these for good measure I'm finding a bunch of minor things I'm probably aught to replace as I do it too. Hoses, bit and bobs like that and the thermostat housing is corroded up so aught to be replaced...

That carb reminds me of the one on my ET4 Vespa, all the wires go to the same places and it too is ridiculously complicated and prone to problems. I do sometimes wonder what the designers think when they come up with solutions like that. Still, a nice Holley will sort all that out and no doubt let it breathe a bit better as well by the looks of it.

Well, that simple new stuff ought to make it work! Air filter, carb, manifold. All you need really How about throwing a random selection of rubber hose ,pipes and small metal objects over it all once you're done for that sleeper look?

The Menace is still progressing, will be out one day, have a BIG lazy engine to go in, so with a bit of gas should be well into the 9's....one day ;D Well well well, who have we here? Welcome aboard! Thought I would pop over and have a look around, running out of forums where I'm not known!! LOL

Some yanks are simple, once you start getting to late 70's onwards you start to get emission control and low power and curse word v6's instead of proper motors with proper carbs. V8's still rule. I'm kicking myself about selling my chevy now and the oldsmobile, and the chevy before that........DOH!!!

Am I the only one who finds carb's complex and fuel-injection curse word-easy? The SPI in my car is the simplest fuel set-up I've ever seen.

Will be miles better with that decent kit on it! Well progress is progress. i started two relatively simple jobs, fixing a pro sill repair,,,properly! (two part job now) and attempting fixing my lock for 3rd time, realising a bits now missing. So celerated by reversing into my neighbouring street lamp! well it was hidden bhind the C pillar! Sure a slight crack wont hurt the bumper! Doh ;D Keep going Al youll get there. *goes to book more time off work*

I'll do a side by side photo of this engine and the engine in my '68 Plymouth. Same engne. One is clear as anything and simple to work on, one is a mass of pipes. The one which is piped up to hell is about 60 or 70 BHP down on the one with a simple carb and distributor...

No, the cam and exhaust are staying stock (at least for now) and they are also different.
Theres also some variations between the way that bHP was measured between 1968 and 1984 so direct comparisons stock-to-stock are not as simple as they may seem.
Should be a worthwhile improvement in drivability anyways
