Right then.... Inner wing rails, check them up and down both sides, inner and outer. Bumpers, often underneath the rubber trim. The corners of front and rear screens. Sunroof panels. Lower rear edges of front wings. Boots are often damp due to a crusty edge around the seal too. Jacking points can go soft, along with front chassis legs. That's aside from doors, sills and underneath the rear end where the suspension mounts... Go through it with a fine toothcomb basically. If you're thinking of upgrading the engine already, then just go for something bigger to start with. They're cheap enough as it is. If it's a cherry though, I'd love to see one slammed on a set of stock steel rims, rim tape, with no head rests and mexican blanket interior. Everybody tries to tart them up in a performance orientated way, might be good to do something different for once.

i had a rust free '83 520 e28. old guy owner for 17 years, lovingly looked after and driven very carefully. paid 150 notes for it with no tax or mot. drove it into the test station with no preparation or pre checks, and it passed. drove it for a while, seemed a bit gutless, and decided i prefered my w123 so tried to sell it. went on ebay twice without so much as a sniff, so i put in into storage. couple of months later i lost the storage so had to try to sell it again, guess what?no takers again. i even tried to give it away to the local bmw owners club, who i spoke to at a show.what a bunch of mongers, turned down a free car. so, i had no choice but to scrap it. what a waste. if id found retro rides a few months earlier I'm sure someone off here would have taken it off my hands. sorry for the lack of rust information in my little anecdote. ;D

^ A damn shame, but also a good indication that the smaller engined models are worth feck all, the larger ones slightly more than feck all, but not a lot

indeed, maybe might have kept it if it had been a bit faster. the fastest it ever went was when it was on phoenixC's trailer on the way to weigh it in. 95, when he was overtaking 3 cars, uphill!!!!! ;D

Blimey....didn't realise they were THAT difficult to shift.... I'd LOVE a 535, but not sure I could live with the thirst, and thats even if I can find one without searching MILES away.... I think this local 520 is rusty, and has sat for some time....we shall see.. Was thinking of the steels and minimal route, small bumpers etc.......I don't do " racy " or " showy " ....or " shiny " in fact.... I think I know where theres a perfect ( garaged ! ) 518, but I would imagine that would have trouble seeing off a pizza moped ?
