I know a lot of people really rate them but being a bit of a j car novice i need educating.
What sizes do they come in? What cars will i find one in? Power outputs, tuning goodies, what box will i need for RWD ect ect.
And the most important question of all, are they cheap?

They are cheap for standard ones mainly 15??cc (1600). Come in 80's corolla fwd and rwd MR2 mk1 and a 20valve bad boy in later corrolla levins.... mr2 offering 120bhp new, rev happy, i like mine but i do yearn for a little more power.... as for tuning look for my thread from 't other day...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

4agze is, command a good price thoough and IIRC its only another 30bhp or so standard, i passengered in on but because the driver was over careful i had more fun in the standard N/a that was battered round the corners! I guess these engines are a bit old hat now, with newer stuff favoured, but stuff one in summat light, it will be a hoot

Cool, thanks for that dude. It was the one in for sale and the minor van that got my brain working. was their not a 2 litre version used in the celica, or is that a completley different engine?

As above, 1587cc (I think) 118-124bhp rated depending on model (124 in AE86 118 in AE82 and MR2 122 IIRC). Get one in an corolla`s, AE82`s, AE86`s, AE92`s and MR2`s (AW11?) and in celicas in other countries. Developed with Yamaha. Toyota T50 box fits it, not so easy to get hold of these days and can make silly money. Bellhousing adaptors for ford Type 9`s used to be available from Fensport.
I remember reading about an 1800 conversion years ago but don't remember any of the details about it.
220+ bhp used to be available in the corolla touring cars. 180bhp is about your whack in a normal road car but even that can cost.
Still my favourite engine, just for the rev range and the noise. Quite outdated compared with modern engines.
Only the AE86model has an inlet suitable for RWD installation but you can chop the throttle end off and weld it to the other side then blank the back off.
Engines are still fairly cheap (mainly because they appeared in so many vehicles) £100-£200, better off getting a complete car if you can though then you can get the loom, ancillaries etc.
20V engine and supercharged are 160ish bhp as standard
There might be some inaccuracies there as I have just relied on memory and its 7 years since I had much to do with them ;D

Other stuff I know/remember reading :
Standard capacity is 1588cc.
Was used in the single seater Formula Atlantic in USA, with 300bhp apparantly.
HKS do (did?) a bolt-on turbo kit.
HKS did a stroker crank to up capacity to either 1700 or 1800, can't remember for sure.
Supercharged version came in Japanese market MK1 MR2 - have been transplanted into most fron and rear drive Corollas.
Later Japanese market models had a 20V head.
There are adapter kits from various companies to fit other Toyota RWD gearboxes.
There were various specs of 4A-GE, denoted by the colour of the cam cover - some had T-VIS, some had stronger blocks with more ribs on the casting.
I'm kicking myself cos I bought a set of unused TRD cams years ago, then sold them on before I fitted my 4A-GE to the 1000.
There's a big following in the USA and Australia, I got lots of info from various forums when doing my transplant.

1975 Toyota 1000 with 4A-GE (tweaked a bit)
1992 Nissan GTi-R (now sold after 17 years)
2001 Subaru Impreza WRX (remapped)
