I prefer this not being a police bashing thread...
The wife, with our 3 year old twins in the back, ran out of petrol in the Audi 80 this morning - her own fault... first day driving the car, and misjudged the red bit of the gauge. Stopped on a quite busy road a couple of tens of yards from a Police Station.
While she is waiting for her Mother to turn up with a can of petrol a member of Nottinghamshires finest turns up: Check she is OK? Offer of assistance? Quick push into there station car park?
Oh no... To inform her that Computer says she is driving an untaxed vehicle.
Wife replies that husband (ie me) only taxed the vehicle last night, and have I forgotten to put the disc in? They look... nope, brand new disc is in the corner of windscreen.
He admits there is a disc there (dated as being bought yesterday!) but STILL the officer says the computer shows vehicle untaxed so he takes all wifes details and says if it doesn't show up in 48 hours he will contact her for further action. BTW he didn't even have a look at it out the holder to see if it was a fake or something.
Now I cannot believe that anything the DVLA does updates in 48 hours... and if given a producer, what more can you do than show them the disc again!?!
Tax, MOT and insurance are of course legit.

It takes a couple of days to show on the system, and does state this on the website.

Don't the rozzers have the ability to read the bar-code on the disc? Where was the disc purchased? Do you have a reciept from the issuing post office? And wtf was the chaps problem? I hope she took note of his number, and chases it up. Not a good way to treat Joe Public. I would recommend a quick call to your local newspaper. A pic of your beloved and the kids looking glum with the disc in hand will soon see some back-tracking and a swift apology.

It seems that MOTs are not the only car related bit of paper these days that are acutally worthless. Computer says no!

Ah, hadn't looked on the website, thanks.
Wifey says he was polite and all, but if the disc is less than 24 hrs old, and it takes 48 to update, it's pretty obvious the disc is legit? I could understand if the disc was a month or 2 old and not showing up...
But now you mention it, I paid in cash but remember a receipt being with all the paperwork at home.
Thanks gentlemen.
I guess I am more annoyed he didn't give her a push into the station car park, so she could have turned the hazard lights off. Which means her battery wouldn't have gone flat (looks like a slightly dodgy battery) and she wouldn't have had to call Britannia Rescue* for a jump start.
* Who were, according to the Mrs, superb at both control room and man on site aspects.

My GF got stopped on the A1 because their wonderful computer system declared her car to not be insured. She had all her documents on her but despite this they refused to believe her and held her there in the back of a cop car until she could get hold of the AA so they could confirm on the phone she was insured with them. On production of her certificate they retorted, "anyone could have made that". It's not like it was a new policy or held with a small company or anything.
Treating honest people like criminals and treating criminals with respect seems to be the go for the plod these days.

Ahh one thing your fogetting this is the Notts police, they don't need to read the bar code what they say goes.
On a more productive note, it does not supprise me that the disc has not shown up yet.

From what I gather from my mates in the area, Notts Police REALLY need to work on their people skills.

got told at the post office that they update them at the end of each month or something like that, (this was in conjunction with the system farting up and not being able to tax a car useful)

Sorry to hear about the hassle filmidget. This seems to be the way the Government wish to run the UK - by database. If the ID Card nonsense gets implemented it can only get much much worse. It's sh*t that law abiding citizens are guilty until proven innocent and this needs to change

My own personal theory is that the "system" knows that there are a certain percentage of people who will flout every law, duck and dive and know enough to tie the system up in knots time and time again. It's a small percentage and the system can live with them. It sometimes even gets lucky and manages to get a few of them into jail. What the system could not cope with is the vast bulk of law-abiding people getting the idea that obeying the law was optional. These people the system comes down on like a ton of bricks. This keeps all the rest of us us scared enought to stay within the lines. Hence innocent but easy to scarre people get treated like crims less we all start becoming un governable while those that are already ungovernable are allowed to run riot.

The missus and me got pulled on the M6 the other week by a copper saying the car was uninsured according to the computer. We told him it was and he let us go with a producer saying that sometimes the central computer is slow to update. we were insured BTW! He was friendly and helpful enough. Its good that they are making an efford to keep the uninsured dross off the roads.
I remember a day when no road tax wasnt an issue, you just got told to get one for next time they saw you. Nowadays they confiscate your car!
