After my PS3 died last month I'm keen to keep it a bit cooler now it's been repaired. What I want to do is stick some 12v DC PC fans (unlimted supply of them lol) near it to push cool air in and draw hot air out. I did have a couple of fans wired up with a USB plug but USB only supplys 5V dc, which while keeping the fans quiet doesnt move much air. What I want to do is use a universal 1-20V dc power supply, to supply the fans. But I want to switch it on via USB so it comes on when the PS3 turns on. I found this, but I don't want to use a big box thing like on the diagram. I know I need to use a relay, but have no idea how to do it. I googled it and that made me even more confused as I didnt know you could get solid state relays. Can one of you clever chaps explain how I may be able to do this please as I would rather not blow my PS3 up lol. Cheers Joe

To do what you want to do, you'll need a relay with a coil that'll switch at 5v, and also a protection diode because coils are nasty things and send spikes of current back down the supply when turned off. TBH your best bet would be to just buy one of these: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K006-relay-board-module-5v-for-Arduino-PIC-Atmel-TTL-10AMP-mains-/221192532055?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item33801a3057Get a USB lead, cut the end off and bare the wires. You'll have red, black, green and white - connect the black wire to the ground connection on the relay board, and the red wire to both +5v and "in". The relay will switch when the PS3 comes on. Wire the ground lead on the fans straight to the ground on the PSU, connect the +12v lead off the PSU to common on the relay board and the +12v lead off the fans into the normally open connector (marked A1) However I bet inside the PS3 there's 12v that you can use somewhere and it'll save a lot of faffing!

This anything you recognize? Just rob power off here. The power supply will do something like 30A so there's bound to be more than enough spare power to run a few fans

Thanks Cobblers! Will give that a try, so all I would need is one of those kits? There is 12v inside the PS3 (bought a broken one to stip for bits) but mine is under warranty so I cant take it to bits.

Yeah, all you'd need is one of them kits plus a 12v power supply and a USB lead to lop the end off

Big thanks to Cobblers Got most of the kit, just need to pop to me dads to pick up a universal PSU as I have a couple down there. Borrowed soldering kit from work as I never got around to buying one. My instructions lol Made a start All soldered up Just about to test Testing, It works!! Whoop! All was going well until I shorted my PSU out.. It's all going to be mounted in the project box How I'm going to connect the red and grey wires to the fans/PSU So stage one done, next step is to get some drainpipe to make the cooling vents.
