still car hunting, been offered an s-reg ('98?) vw polo. will have full mot, alloys, not sure on tax yet or even colour as I'm not seeing it 'til the weekend. i know the seller well as he is a family friend, and ive seen his work and can vouch he is good and honest. Reason I'm posting now is I'm used to driving 2cvs and other a-series citroens so i know what to looks for on them. 'normal' cars are a different matter. so, for around £600, you can buy them on fleabay, but as always you cant see everything, so what do i look for?
Thanks in advance! Chris

what 'box issues do they have? Selection issues or do they pack-up catastrophically?

Look for rust (they like to rot on the sills), faulty central locking (pump gets water in), if it has electric windows make sure they work (loom in door brakes), check the locks work (common for them to brake). Also not sure if the 6n has this but the clutch pedal on the 6n2 can snap due to the welds being engineered to snap in a bump failing with age.
If it's a 1.4, gearbox - it likes to break. Look for leaking seals where the rods go in to the box.
Then just usual stuff you would look for on any used car.

alsorts on the gearbox i think , make sure it sounds nice and all gears work as they should, no savage leaks etc
if you buy it maybe change the gear oil or make sure its topped up

it's a 1ltr, so i hope it doesnt suffer the gearbox issues you speak of, although i'm lost when you say 6n or 6n2 though! complete vw novice here!

As above but check the power steering pipes as they corrode and are expensive to to replace

you might find that the 1.0L engined car feels a little bit underpowered for its size, but you might find that acceptable if you're used to 2cv power. if you want to carry a car full of people, drive at motorway speeds regularly or live in a hilly area, you might find that the larger engined car 1.3 or 1.4 8 valve can be more ecconomical

i had a 1 litre 6n2 (6n2 is the five door, 6n is the three) it was fine by yourself but didnt like passengers and hills.
i got 45-50mpg driving pretty economically most of the time, was pretty low geared so at at just under 4k at 70, so i would do 60.
Only issue i had was clutch pedal ripping of bulkhead, which is apparently pretty common. but was never left stranded. it had done 160,000 miles so was past its prime, paid 60 for it sold for 400 a year and a half later. recommended car for sure

6n2 is the five door, 6n is the three Nothing to do with the number of doors, it's an age thing. 6n is a mk4, 6n2 is facelifted or mk5 6n: 6n2:
