I have a P reg MGF in red I *think* it has the COF paint code which means it's 'Flame Red'. I boguht three tins of rattle can Flame Red from Halfords - spraying it in a poorly lit garage and then moving it outside revealed the colour is much lighter than the rest of the car - - is there two shades of Flame Red, I know there's a Flame Red 88, which was used on <1988 cars - were 1997 MGF's available in Solar Red, which is a colour slightly darker than Flame Red? Sorry for my random colour code ramblings.

It may have had a non standard respray in the past? Take a piece of bodywork (fuel flap) to a car paint shop and they should be able to match it.

Difficult to say from the lighting but maybe "scorched red" from the first pic and as for the second pic it looks like the same shade of red on my Rover mini cooper, in which case no one knew the shade not even the Rover dealer.

I use two paintshops, and they're both absolutely useless, had one match a colour with swatches on the =body of the car= and they still got it completely wrong. I still have the paint! If it's not matching Flame Red, and it's the wrong year for Solar Red, what could it be? It's definitely not had a colour change.

My Mini Cooper is the same year as your MGF and it's supposed to be solar red, but its not. I can't remember what the paint code is as the car is at my parents. I don't know if Rover were just painting them any old red they had at the time or what but its not the only odd bits of my car.

What area of the car are you painting?
Red is ridiculously hard to blend unless you are a painter with mad skillz

The tone is completely different - it doesn't even look the same even in the dark - I only sprayed it because I didn't want to put the car outside in absorbent primer, and it'd be better as a primer when I rub it down again. I actually believe they just used any old colour tbh. But I think it is Solar Red, deffo not Flame Red!

Red is a swine to match, the best you can hope for is that it looks OK in sunlight - even a perfect daylight match will look completely different to the rest of the car when under streetlights.
However, Halfords red paint off the shelf is a laughably terrible match in almost every circumstance, It's also very transparent so if you are painting over grey primer it takes 4+ coats to cover properly, but there's rarely a lot of point bothering since it's never the right colour to start with.
If you are stuck with using Halfords, they can custom mix a can of decent paint (not that piss water that's on the shelf) for about £12 which will be a better match for the colour code and it'll cover in two coats and leave a better finish. They should have a book of colour chips and let you take the card outside to compare to the car, but most stores have lost /binned it by now.
Your best bet is to go to a proper refinishing place with a proper set of colour chips (with variations either side of the formula to allow for fading) and get them to properly match your colour, then custom mix a proper aerosol. If you plan on using a couple of cans all in one go, get them to mix you two pack aerosols - once you press the button on the bottom to inject the activator, you have to use the whole can within 24 hours but it covers much better and leaves a much harder wearing finish.

I've been spraying for over 10 years - OK, it's amateurish at best, but I've sprayed two red cars and got a better match on Vauxhall Flame Red one than this. The MGF's paintwork is still really good and hasn't faded, I really doubt it's out because one colour has faded, it's really noticable, not that effect you get under amber street lighting like this on the door: But totally obvious. Will try the local paint shop and/or get some Solar Red and try that out.

Have a gander here: www.mgfcar.de/vin/mgfcolours.htmFlame Red (1989) is COF, but it must have a laquer over it otherwise it doesn't look right (I'd post a pic of a Metro Gta with a half-peeled bonnet but its dark and raining now so.....).
