North Hants tyres Sinton Tyres Raceways All do WSW rubber. None of them are cheap. www.frost.co.uk do a white wall tyre paint. Its adertised for redressing old white walls but I assume you could use it to turn a regular tyre into a white wall. I'm going to try this as I need two front tyres on my 5A and I can;t afford £60 a time for WSWs, especially not as they are wearing funny, so I want to bosh on some cheap used tyres until I sort the odd wear issue out. Final option is Bay Area Rods do a whitewalling service. www.bayarearods.co.uk and look under "services"

Various Volkswagen specialists sell the Atlas white-wall trims if that's what you're after. Try Karmann Konnection. Sorry I don't have a number for them.

The problem with them is that they often flap about at speed.

AK, a word of warning on the whitewall paint...I bought some from north hants (i think) years ago to do the chevy, and it went from white to grey in about a day...I was pretty pised off cos it was about £20 a tin.

I used Mr Gasket's white wall crayon once. That did not go well!
Is the stuff Frost sell the same you used as they advertised it as "New!" and "revolutionary new product" and all that.

ive found www.vintagetyres.com that do the inserts (rubber not plastic) for 35 quid a set which aint bad for a tester. really cant afford 130 odd quid a tyre atm, thats 500+ just for the tyres! the cars probably only worth 3 times that!!

You want a clean dry non-greasy tyre. Take your time getting the flaps under the rim properly too...and most of all..keep your fngers crossed- I've had em stay on for between 6 miles and 6 months...just depends on the tyreflap god

Gripfill/no more nails? even if i changed the tyres the extra 35quid for a new set of walls would vastly oiutweigh the cost of true whites!

I'm pretty sure the flaps that Vintage Tyre supplies sell are the usual "Atlas" ones that are cheaper direct form the guy who does them (just remembered, "Bravado") and who advertises in Custom Car I think and possibly some of the classic magazines. I usually expect a set flaps to last up to 10,000 miles before I loose one. Then get another set and just rotate as and when the odd one flies off. The bulge of tyre on rim can make a difference too. If you have over "baloony" rubber the flaps won't last as long. Don't use any lube before fitting them but I disagree with phatford and think it is best to put something on once they've been fitted and settled. I haven't had a problem with them then squeezing out as they do if they are lubed first. I've used a can of a Halfords spray "Rubber and Nylon lubricant" with success. The lube helps reduce the wear you get on the rubber of the sidewalls. Finally, if you have one fly off then stop ASAP and make sure its not left some remnants that are causing the tyre to deflate. They're normally fine but I didn't stop once and had a blow out at 80mph on the M25 I've done probably about 90,000 miles on flap equipped cars by the way.

why not just use rubber adhesive between the walls and tyres?!! laybond make some good stuff....gripfill max or just regular spray adhesive would most likely work no?

Not tried it and not currently using any on the road, so over to you! I think you'll need something quite strong but quite compliant too as there's quite a lot of relative movement between tyre and flap.

I agree seth that the way the tyre sits on the rim originally does make a difference. I used to run them on 185/60/14 on a 7" rim, and that was prob as much stretch as I'd want to go for. I fitted a set to streetrules's 123 and they were fine as the tyre was a normal balloon appearance. I had a friend fit the atlas whites to his bay and try adhesive without success sadly...still give it a go if you fancy. Oh and if you buy em from bravado, he's a nice chap and you can buy 5 at a time if you need...so you;ve got a spare.
