I'm looking to get something a bit more sporty than my current daily which is a Volvo V40 1.8. I don't have a huge budget about 500 quid so thats gonna rule out any cheap to run RWD retros.
Seen loads of these Puma's on ebay and autotrader for anywhere between 200 and 500 with tax and test.
Question is are they any good for daily duties I have a 95 mile a day commute.
Also thats why i'm not after an engine over 2.0ltr as i'd be bankrupt in no time. ;D
thanks in advance John

Perfect for daily duties, it's basically a Fiesta.

Supposedly very good fun to drive. For your budget they will have rusty rear arches. No arch repair panels are available. However someone discovered that Peugeot 206 front arches have almost exactly the same profile. So they can be repaired using them.

Yup! Came in either a 1.4, 1.6 and the 1.7 (there's two versions of the 1.7 though)... The engines can be dropped into Fiestas too (people drop the 1.7 into the mk5 fez - it's also got VCT)
Rear arches rust to hell and back as previously mentioned but a looked after one would be nice to have. Start looking!

Fun to drive but our one started to get on my nerves really quickly. They have little headroom in them, the visability out is poor and the headlights are useless as well. Not tried the smaller engines but the 1.7 is a revvy little unit with 125 hp but the car is seriously undergeared and gets annoying on A roads, never mind the motorway.I suspect that they're geared that way to cover up a serious lack of torque, 70 mph is something like 4000 rpm so the economy isnt brilliant. More a round town point and squirt car that a motorway cruiser.

I love mine. Ford Puma 1.7 by retromotoringSuch good fun to drive, really puts a smile on my face. Lovely and agile, sharp steering, nice snicky gearchange, pointy turn-in and lift-off oversteer if you want it. Could use a bit more power but that's more because the chassis can so obviously handle more rather than it being particularly slow (mine is the 1.7 with variable cam timing). Not bad for £130...

I would say drive one before you make any kind of decision. Most people you speak to will rave about them. I drove one a couple of years ago and absolutely hated it! I couldnt get comfortable in it, I couldnt see out of it and it didnt handle brilliantly (this may have just been that particular one)

Bloody hell that was a bargain I like the shape of them and in my head i think it must be like driving a 90's hot hatch to hoon around in. They don't seem to need much I was thinking of getting one and then just adding lows and some nice BBS split rims. PCD is 4x108 i think ;D

Sister had a 1.7, great fun to drive, I'm a Vauxhall man through and through but was more fun than a lot of what I've had, however if you're above 6ft, you'll soon begin to loathe them, very much a girls car IMO, shame Ford couldn't transfer more of the Puma into the Cougar

very much a girls car IMO I've been told this so many times since I've had mine, and it make me grin - because it means that every time someone sees me in their mirrors they are even less likely to expect me to go hurtling past, tipping it into a roundabout ahead and three-wheeling round into the distance ;D

shame Ford couldn't transfer more of the Puma into the Cougar Cougar ,now there's an underated future classic. I love the looks of them even if it is just based on the old Mondeo.

very much a girls car IMO My wife's (Subaru WRX-owning at the time) brother was of the same opinion. Right up to the time I took him out on one of my favourite roads in my wife's 1700 Puma Lux and made him squeal with fear like a little piggy. Revvy, brilliant handling, 40mpg+ if you're gentle with it (although that will drop to low 20s if you use the revs a lot). They do rust though, as already mentioned. Prices are in the doldrums at the minute, but good ones will appreciate in years to come.

FORS. Cheap, brilliant fun to drive, 40mpg, reasonable boot, ocasional back seats, mega easy parts supply, reliable and good looking.
AGAINSTS. Fairly firm ride, visibility average and rear arch rust.
I adore mine and it's my chosen car for a trip to spain in april. I was gonna sell it and get a galaxy but I bought a roof rack instead. I'd miss it too much!

very much a girls car IMO Don't get me wrong, I think their fantastic cars, but due to internal space, I simply think they were designed for women, I'm only 6ft 2 but can't drive one for any real distance as their that snug, but if you're less than 6ft, bargain car

This looks ace! I've been in one a few times, they're a bangy fiesta lol so check ride comfort before you commit, it's not for everyone!
