Hey all, Just a quick post to show the start of a build thread for my latest purchace... A MkII Ford Transit SWB Van with an Atlas Rear Axle and 1600 Pinto engine. It's going to be cleaned up and sorted out mechanically first. Then. ~Low? ~Carpet inside/LED Lights ~Stickerbomb the rear windows... ~Evil-Bank-robberish modifications... Blacked out windows/Yellow lights etc... What does everyone think? Quick pictures: Project Trans-Rat is GO!

I just typed a long message on my phone, hit the wrong button and lost it. In essence, I was trying to say keep it standard looking, waxoil the curse word out of it and get the sides signwritten and patinated. Then enjoy smoking around in what's now a rare van.

Cheers mate, It's quite a solid van really, It's had lot's of ugly patches and needs a few more but it's character... I have always toyed with the idea of a sign-written car [First idea was my Safari Land Rover] Anyone know of a good reputable sign-writer and what sort of prices I'd be looking at?

2 litre I4 engine from a late sierra would be my choice. Nice and torquey for lugging the van around.
What's it like with the 1.6 pinto in it? Is that standard? Can't help but feel it may be s little over worked!

I've not actually driven it yet, The clutch cable has snapped. It's been stood for 6-years but I popped a bit of fresh petrol in and It fired up! It's a bit of a project... I was thinking possibly 3.0 Essex V6 or Transit Di engine out of a later model... We shall see... Should be good with the ATLAS Axle though.

clutch cable £5 drv frt brake hose £3 frt pads £5 airfilter £3 kingpin axle set £15 mirror glass £2 rear wheel bearing £5 woodhead shockabsorber (frt or rear)£10
good used rear light £5

Gotta love a mk2 transit! One of my earlies memories is going on a school camp in one borrowed from the local scout group which was hand painted & multi coloured!

What this Atlas axle then? I have no idea what that means, it must be pretty spesh though if it can offset the fun* of a 1600 pinto engine in a Transit.
Your van looks cool, I too support leaving it fairly standard and lashing on the waxoyl, ‘bank robber style’ mods sound quite interesting as I don’t believe there is an established bank robber ‘look’ apart from trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. Having said that, if you leap out of this van outside the HSBC wearing a donkey jacket/balaclava combo, yelling ‘IT’S A STICK UP’ and waving a sawn-off around I reckon most people will get it OK. The downside will be that you will then have to dodge the coppers on the bypass and drive to an industrial unit and abandon the Transit in favour of a Mk1 Granada.

Holy bank-jobs, that's top notch...!!! I've always wanted and early-ish Mk2 Transit and the one you've got looks pretty much perfect... I cannot wait to see how this project progresses

I love mk2 transits, this needs long term love with subtle mods and nobody would ever say a bad word about it, mainly for the fear of finding out you are a bank robber who want to relive the old days.

I'm interested in any available parts really, that clutch cable sounds useful! Hopefully deck out the back with carpet and chairs... make it into a 'Zombie' day van or camer maybe... I'll have to give it a wash off and get some better pictures! watch this space!

Very nice. Definatly after a Transit one day.Mk1 or 2.I recon banded steels and drop, done. BTW, I have a decent carb'd sierra twin cam for sale, should you want to go that route. Gearbox etc too, just in case.

Sierra Engine and Box you say... Will have to see how this baby drives with the 1600! Possibly some more power needed... I know that ATLAS rear axles are favoured by the Rally boys for putting on Escorts. It's not starting and running off the key, could do with a service and a new radiator...

From memory they are better than you would expect with the 1600....obviously you won't be out running anything modern but it will keep up with the traffic ok and be reasonably economical.
