Yes you can, if they are the same thickness you often find the mild will melt easier than the stainless(depending on the grade). Obviously you don't get the normal advantages of the stainless.
If you are welding mild to stainless you might as well use normal wire as there is no point to pay £60+ for a 12kg roll of stainless when you will get the same result with a £12 15kg roll of mild steel.
If you are welding stainless to stainless then you are better using stainless wire. There are a lot of different grades of stainless wire. I do quite a bi with 310 stainless at work and it costs around £350 for a roll of wire for that
