I have got myself a set of plans to build a minature steam powered traction engine. The plans are relatively simple only needing a small amount of lathe work and a bit of milling but should provide a nice little toy at the end. The engine should have enough power to easily pull a person around so if I am allowed I may bring it along to a future gathering once finished. I will keep this thread updated once the plans arrive and I get started on the construction but in the mean time have a photo of what I'm planning to build. The plans to build it are available on ebay and at www.steamshed.com and are approx £22

I like it! Will the boiler be subject to a pressure test before use?

You could use it to run a genny to heat the farm with electric overnight!

Its heated by a 4 gas burners using a mixture of propane and butane. If I want to use it in a public place then legally the boiler needs to be tested. For my own piece of mind I will be getting the boiler inspected and using off the shelf parts in that part of the build. It doesn't run at a particularly high pressure 50psi but I still don't want it blowing up in my face! Build will start in earnest after I get the wheel horse tractor I collected this morning up and running.

I'm no expert, but reading between the lines on the steamshed site,I bet theres more than a few basic holes and lathe work to do!Hope you show the construction pics, very interesting little project! Has given me an idea for a design for my next little ride on wagon.

Yes there is a fair amount of work involved but the instructions are clear and comprehensive.

I used to have something similar when I was a kid called a Mammod steam engine. I believe there were a few int the series great fun sure they used to use hexi lite stove fuel. Can't remember though. How is the project going?

Got a few of the bits I need now but really the project is on hold for the next couple of months as I'm moving house. I'll get going on it properly later in the year.

Yep Static caravan now in place but still needs, water, sanitation and electric sorted. Loads to do still before moving some time in the week following the 20th of July so my projects are all on hold for the time being.

Try and grab some kingspan type insulation if you see any going spare, there's not a fat lot as standard in statics and they can get pretty chilly in the winter. Its worth rigging up a shade tent type set up as well if you've got the time as they can get pretty warm inside in the summer too when the sun is coming straight down. Good luck with the move and the pending operation.

Have now got all the bits required to make the boiler together so intend to start building the boiler this weekend. Just need to do a few practice silver solder runs before doing anything safety critical like the boiler.

Here is the basic boiler kit gathered I have included the pen in the picture to give an idea of scale.

Just tested the father in laws boiler...... Basically a leak down test to see how much pressure it holds and if it drops off after a certain time.
His is for a Britannia class steam loco....boiler is just over 2 foot long it's a monster
Good luck

Once ive finished building it I have to do the following.
Pressurise it to 10psi with compressed air, with boiler submerged. Any leaks at this pressure will be repaired. Then I will fill it with water and pressurise it the same way 50psi. If after 20 mins the pressure has dropped by less than 5psi then its another hydraulic pressure test at 100psi. Again looking for a drop over 20mins of no more than 5 psi. If it drops more than 5 psi either time its a pure air test under water at that pressure and resoldering the leak. If it passes that it should be capable of passing a boiler inspection as the maximum working pressure is 50psi
