Let's go on a little journey back through the mists of time... Let me welcome you to 1996. Imagine you are 17 years old, modding your first car (for the sake of arguement a lurid Skoda 120LS ).... Now what do you read as your 'bible of cool'? Where can you possibly get inspiration from?? Custom Car? Street Machine? No wai! That's for wierdo's stuck in the 70's. Sure the cars go fast in a straight line. And there is some 'styling'... but not what 'our hero' wants. Practical Classics? Popular Classics? Your Classic etc?? Well if you like real ale, MGB's and generally are an old git then fine. But where's the snorty cars? Where's the modifications? The 'outside the box' thinking? Max Power? I think not... the rot was already setting in by then.... either big money builds on brand new motors or 'advice' that was pretty useless. Then all of a sudden, what's this! Something new, something that was bang up my street, stuffed full of all the motors I have always loved modded out just the right way! TAA-DAA!! So I picked these up on the bay last week. My originals are long gone, read to death and re-cycled... so this was a good way to get back 'to my roots' if you like. What an excellent mag too, great balance of features and practical, hands-on type stuff. Now here's where it does get a bit interesting.... - Why did this magazine die off after just a year? Was it just ahead of it's time? After all, I think it would have appealed to just about everyone on here. - Look at some of the cars on the covers..... eg issue 1 has a D-reg Manta on the front. And inside an E-plate SD1.... these cars were 9 or 10 years old at the time, and firmly RETRO enough for a mag feature. Makes you think, doesn't it, what with all that hoo-ha yesterday...... Would anyone like some scans later?

- Why did this magazine die off after just a year? Was it just ahead of it's time? After all, I think it would have appealed to just about everyone on here. you're absolutely right , i think it would have appealed to most on here but unfortunately after about a year under the large 'retro' title the words 'and classics' were inserted . then a wee while later the word 'retro' was removed so it ended up being 'classics' which was a real shame cos as you say it featured some cracking cars to begin with.. funnily enough when 'retro cars' first hit the shelves i do remember thinking at last here is another stab at the 'retro market' and hoping that it wouldn't dissappear up its own hoop like the previous effort. WHOOPS !!

I don't remember that magazine at all. If it was as difficult to get as Retro Cars magazine I'm not surprised it didn't last long.

Still got all mine at my parents house. I used to love that mag and along with CCC was one of my favourite reads at the time. For whatever reason there wasnt the market and it just turned into another generic classic mag. Obviously the classic car scene must still be quite a lot bigger as it can still support half a dozen classic mags. And it only seems to be the ford marque that can keep a "retro" type mag going with Classic Ford (formerely Ford Heritage) and now Retro Ford.

OK, so I have had to sack off going to work today as the trains are farked. So I'll do a bit of work at home then start scanning some of this stuff in Man, I so wish I had a time-machine.... looking through the classifieds... 1660cc 2-door mk2 Escort, full T&T, £750 or how about a fully modded magazine featured Manta GTE for £1500. Yowser.

Let me welcome you to 1996. Imagine you are 17 years old, modding your first car (for the sake of arguement a lurid Skoda 120LS ).... Easy done, I was 18 with a brown HC Viva! I used to buy Retro, it was superb! Full of quality tin. I think that was a good time for the magazines, Street Machine were featuring some quite accessible cars, and CC wasn't as hardcore as it became later on. However I'm scared this may be nostalgia which probably makes me officially old!

Wow, I remeber that! I got my mum to buy the first two issues when they came out ( I was 9 or 10 at the time) and I think I still have them in one form or another. I think that magazine has a lot to do with why I like old cars now and I remeber loving the Avenger tigers in issue two. I had always assumed until reading this thread that "retro cars" was just the same magazine as this but I guess it wasn't now. I think the free sticker that came with issue one ended up on my mountain bike. ;D

I remember that mag. I still have the free sticker stuck on my filing cabinet. At the time it hit the mark exactly and I was quite suprised when it degenerated into Classics magazine. Quite a dissapointment.

Quite a dissapointment. Ditto here, and I'm sure that's where my sticker is too! It reminded me a bit of Auto Performance mag which tried to do a similar thing back in the early 80's, and which I bought every copy of until that died out and merged into CCC. Hmmm, there seems to be a theme here.....
