just picked up this today from Norfolk. red 520i auto 109,000 miles 7 owners. lovely car to drive, going to have a proper look over it tomorrow but no rust in the usual places, looks solid, has a wobble on the steering at around 50-60 mph, my initial suspicions are that it needs new lower control arms which should cure this. Apart from that its a long term project to uprate and just cruise in ( perhaps a cheeky engine swap in the future to something modern BMW and 6 cylinder) 1st modification is a 3 spoke M5 steering wheel because the only thing about the retro-tastic interior i don't like is the 4 spoke wheel. couple of pics after the journey home to see the starting point

Looks good. I've a nice fine spline M-Tech one wheel, available @£49 posted if it's of interest? You'll need to check the build date as that could be either fine or coarse spline.

Right, this afternoons mission, strip down the door cards and reconnect the rear winding mechanism so the rear windows work, and strip the front door cards down and sort out my electric windows, which seem to get bored of (slowly) going up and down partway through and have to have a rest!

Ok, i was busy demolishing a shed this afternoon so i didn't get to strip down the door cards, but i did clean up under the arches to get out the months of caked on mud. I also took the time to take off the door mirrors, side repeaters and the door handles, which had been colour coded to the body and I didnt think suited the lines of the car at all Although here the rear handle and door mirror is missing so now the car looks like this: much more 'period' in my opinion I also decided to shadow-line the rear clusters, as i didnt think the chrome suited the red ( matter of individual taste, might not go down well ) and lose the tatty looking tailipipe trim to leave it as standard mild steel tip

cant go too far wrong with an e28, always my favourite shape of BMW and it doesnt take much to make them look really classy Although not too sure on the shadowline clusters, when the rest of the car looks to have good chrome work? Looks like a nice clean examle though!

The chrome on the car isnt bad for the age, bit scabby and cloudy round the rear window but those lights need replacing, one has a crack in the reverse and indicator lens that lets water in, these are a stop gap till i find some decently priced. The electric windows are next on the list (though i accidently cut off the circuit breaker to them yesterday under steering column in a moment of 'lets press buttons and see what they do' haha)

Will watch this as I have exactly the same model, tho mine was registered in 85. I also have the same wheel wobble at 50-60 mph, thought my wheels just needed balanced tho.

Well I started on the rear windows that were non functional. stripped cards down and found both regulators laying in the bottom of the doors... problem identified.. 10min fix, what amused me was to cover up the easy to fix issue, someone in the past has wedged a bit of wood in the runners to stop the glass dropping lol, classy. and yes, the car has been resprayed 10 years back if anyone has noticed the door insides being a different colour to the body, i will blow them in the same red colour once the rest of the restore has been done

Ok quite a few pics from todays efforts, set out to have a look under the front end and quickly repaint the OE 15s that are on there and have seen better days. notice the 225/60 balloon tyres, pretty sure those are not OE fitting, back has 205/60 which seems a lot more plausible all seems ok under there, despite my earlier diagnosis there was no knocking from balljoints, but thats not to say that under load they don't wobble ( don't worry its not balanced on a single jack, there are axle stands under the front jacking points!) sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/226899_10151426241097492_2118613525_n.jpg[/img] no rot under the arches or inner wings which was a pleasant surprise post garden blow-over 12 years of oxidation removed partially with the aid of red t-cut and zinnobar red comes up ok! before suspension settled after settling with my daily Focus RS mk1

This looks good, I like the E28 and enjoy reading about them.
Returning the door handles, mirrors and side repeaters to black looks so much better. I agree the red didn't look good.
These things are personal, but I've always liked the chromed rear lights so would have left them like that. That's not to say the shadowline ones look bad - they don't - I just prefer the chrome. BTW the exhaust was fitted with a chrome tip from the factory on these.
Is the bright work on the E28 fitted to the windows and suchlike chromed plastic, or is it polished stainless steel like a Jaguar's? I can't remember. If it is polished stainless like a Jag, then metal polish (such as autosol) will bring them up as new. Don't do this if they're plastic of course.

hey Foxy Looks like you found a gem here. Looks really solid underneath, what is the panel just below bootlid look like? My old 528 was quite bad under there. I reckon this one is screaming out for a nice 4.0 V8 Watching this one.

it all seems solid everywhere, bit of welding been done to jacking points i think, but clean everywhere else, sure MOT will pick up anything i miss.
David, the chrome is chromed plastic around the windows as far as i can tell, it looks like that anyway and has gone pretty bad in places, the brightwork that is chromed metal is fine, could do with a centre section on the rear bumper and there are 3 corrosion spots, but thats about it really
cheers for the comments guys
