right. the starter motor on the buggy is being a tw*t. it sounds like its either come away from the actual engine or has stripped part of a cog. it will start the engine sometimes but other times it will just spin. it will start it with a bit of rocking (in gear) and swearing. it used to just have problems when the engine was cold but it did it when it was warm today.
anyone know what cogs most likely to be a little toothless? the one on the motor side or the engine side? could it just have come away from the engine? it doesnt seem loose or anything
how easy is it to replace one? looks pretty simple

Sounds like the starter solenoid could be jamming to me?
My bay does this occasionally, I just turn the ign off and try again.

The starter motor is real easy to replace, just jack it up and take the NSR wheel off.
From what your saying it sounds like the solenoid. If its spinning its not throwing the starter cog out far enough to meet the flywheel. If it sounds like its grinding, then the starter cog is meeting the flywheel but not enough so the teeth don't engage properly. Rocking in gear will do nothing as the flywheel isnt in constant contact with the starter motors cog.
Best of just replacing it, its cheap enoguh and easy enough, although solenoids can be replaced on their own, or rebuilt, but its just not worth it.
don't forget to change the support bush in the gearbox housing.

sorry i didnt reply to this sooner. i rock it in gear because the engine has been sat for most of the time over the winter so i figure "a bit of loosening" may make starting it easier.
so you reckon another started motor will do it? they seem pretty cheap to me.
just to make sure I'm looking at the right thing, is it at the top drivers side of the engine? if it is, the job will be a piece of wee. i conveniently have a hole there to get at it.
and guz: who is we? ;D

thats the one. Rockinh in gear will not move the starter motor though as the starter cog doesnt touch the flywheel untill the solenoid throws it forward.

I got the same problem with my starter. Usually after a few tries it'll engage, after spinning like a tw*t every other time . Sounds like the solenoid to me too. If a replacement is that cheap it's not worth messing about, just replace it
