Some c**t tried to steal my missus D-reg VW Polo the other day. They smashed the quarter light and broke off the plastic cowling from the steering column but that seemed to be it. We reckon that they were disturbed as there was no damage to teh wiring and the stereo and speakers and some tools and an air rifle were not stolen from the car.
Anyway, due to the damage and my missus no longer feeling the same about the car we decided to sell it. (See the For Sale section) so to make sure that all was still ok I decided to take it for a test drive. This is the point that I found out the the curse word has f*cked the steering lock mechanism up. The steering lock now goes on and off of its own volition and has rendered the car undriveable.
So - Firstly - does anyone know a quick and easy way to fix or disable completely the steering lock
Secondly - can someone explain to me why anyone would try to nick a shabbly looking D-Reg Polo Estate rather than the other cars that surrounded it (including my own 205 GTi)?

I'm not too familiar with VWs, but as it's old this may be a way...
If you strip back the cowling, you might be able to see where the lock bolts on. You should see two dome shaped bolts that hold it on - the nuts snap off on assembly. You should be able to chisel these round and remove the entire lock.
When I first met Mrs bxer, she had an old X reg Metro, that got nicked, I fixed it, and we gave it away to friends, and it got nicked again...
Apprentice scum, looking for something easy as Akku says...

Cheers guys, I love the way that the swear filter has replaced one of my expletives with the phrase "a bounder and a cad"
I'll try chiseling the lock off this afternoon.

What a pain in the @ss! Similar thing happened about 10 years or so ago when my sister had a Mk1 Fiesta, someone nicked that and wrecked the locks. When we asked the police why they'd nick it over a nicer newer faster type car they said it was 'cos it was easy and cheaper than getting a bus home from the pub! Luckily we found it on a local industrial estate and fixed it up, then I learnt to drive in it! Wish we'd kept it now as it was a cool little car, rambling off topic so I'll shut up now...

Kids looking for a cheap easy joy ride I guess. I'm not familiar with the ignition lock on these old vws but many cars have shear bolts on the steering lock that have a head that snap off on assemply so you cant unbolt them. To get them off you need a hammer and punch (or chisel) to tap the smooth head of the bolt round. To get to them you need to take the steering wheel and the steering cowling off.
*edit* sorry someones already said all that!

its the ease of it,it was probably a combination of it being an older car (no immobiliser) access to the car,a possible quick exit and possibly some knowledge of how to do the deed, probably picked up in borstal.when they nicked my imp, there were 3 other cars on my drive all faster (with the possible exception of the rover25) all newer and all with ICE gear in them.they still failed to get my imp more than 50yds away, and thanks to them i'm still imp-less.

It really p*sses me off when stuff like this happens. And the worst thing is even if the police did catch them, they'd probably get slap on the wrist and an hours community service painting the local school railings or something! Mindless scum ...
