Was there play when shaking it top-bottom? If not it's more likely to be play in the track rod.
As a general rule:
Top-bottom play = lower ball joint or top mount Side-side play = track rod/steering rack Play in all directions = wheel bearing

Find a helper to put there foot on the brake pedal while you shake it, if the play stops with the brake applied, its the bearing.

Find a helper and get them to shake the wheel. look behind the wheel yourself whilst your doing it and look for play in the ball joints and track rod ends. If you can't see any hold the relevant part with your hand and get your helper to shake the wheel if there is play in the joint you will feel it.
