If you ever seen me on Vortex (VW owners out there) some people may know I bought an 83 Scirocco in the UK and shipped it to the USofA. Its a 1.6 Carb, 3 speed Automatic. My question is what or how to rebuild it. I plan on taking the entire interior out, most of the engine, and take out the suspension....should I keep it OEM or make it something else. Everything is in good condition but I see others out there making rally cars, or dropping it to the ground. I'm asking the opinions of others. Photos to help with your thoughts....

First thing I'd do is invest in either a 1.8t or vr6 lump! Other than that just do what you want to do to the car, don't just build it for the masses.

What are you going to be using the car for? Every day use dropping it right to the ground is going to mean you have to take humps at <10-15 and you'll have to watch for arch rub unless you roll the arches. I had that issue on my last Escort, I ended up raising her back up as I ripped the welds off the exhaust... Next thing to take into consideration, a lot of cars these days are fetching top money being standard... thinking about it, if you bought another interior and for example spent £700 getting it re-upholstered to leather etc, putting it in the car probably wouldn't make hardly any difference to the overall value so you're probably best (when its time to sell) to put the original back in and selling these on seperately. A 1.8 G60 lump would look right at home in her but at the end of the day, its YOUR car. Sometimes less is more.... GL.

It looks like your car is in excellent condition, so I'd leave it exactly as it is. What is the point of importing a really nice car if you're just going to re-do it all? An OEM rebuild would be completely pointless. If you want to modify it, then by all means change it to suit your taste, but there is no point restoring a nice car to make it slightly fresher. To start with, a good clean and detail would be the way to go, then as you drive it and enjoy it, you can decide what you want to change.

I do hope to keep it standard because it gathers looks. Other than paint that I have to clean up because it has rust and paint chipping in small areas so I'm going to have to shave and primer places. I really want a G60 or a 16v to keep it period correct.

Hahaha ^^^ when you get slammed with negativity on having an automatic in the US like I do, it does make you want to change it up a bit regardless of what I "think" is better.

Yeah its your car, you should have it how you want it, not adjust it to reduce negativity from others. I would say ‘mega props’ to you for importing a RHD automatic scirocco to the states, that defo gets some RESTECP from me! if anyone is dissing you because of the gearbox just ignore em.

I've always thought the Scirocco is a great looking car that's crying out for a V6 and a nicer interior. Difficult to do anything about the dash unless you're mega capable, but leather and maybe an Alfa V6?

You'd get a Corrado if you wanted a V6 surely. Depends what you prefer regarding the Automatic really, for many cars finding good manual cars becomes harder as they get older as they are the cars that get DRIVEN, with more automatics being bought by owners that rarely drive them so they remain in better condition. Just as good original cars become rarer.
Worth 'modifying' & collecting factory options or even Scirocco-specific aftermarket parts you desire that may be available now but will become far harder to get as survivors dwindle.
edit: Hope that doesn't sound like a suggestion for collecting all manner of 'period' tat. Make it the 'best' spec. Scirroco you can. Fuel injection, leather, good exhaust, suspension? (even if not obviously lowered) May or may not add value in the end, but if you will enjoy it more...

I would have thought a 1.6 A/T was a pretty rare nowadays, and for that reason alone I'd be keeping it as is, bar maybe wheels and lows.
Especially as it looks like such a clean car too.
Best of luck whatever you do with it.

Most of the American Auto Market is Automatics hence why a lot of car people here go for the 5-spd. Where as its opposite in the UK/European market with all the 5-spd around. For me personally, they never had the 1.6 engine the US so I probably hold the only one here. I like to be original and mostly shop ebay (Uk version) for genuine parts and have gathered quite a collection in a spare room with extras that I may not need right now, but have for later. I think the only thing that I would change in a heartbeat is the dash back to an MK1 Rocco dash with the way the binnacle is laid out. Personally, I think it gives that older 70s look
