The one on the left mate! All day long! The one on the right is too much. Just my opinion though, which doesnt make it correct ;-)

no modding is better than modding to make your car worse, alot of people don't understand that

i understand that...and I'm sure my crude picture isnt particularly great but was just as a general idea. Any suggestions? apart from standard because....tbh, the consul grille never really did much for me and I'm trying to achieve a pretty low-brow style anyway. ive done pretty rides.....i fancy roughing it

Black painted mesh and chrome drawer knobs? Perhaps a single horizontal floating bar? You could use a stainless mini bumper with the ends cut off and re-shaped.

I still like the pic on the left, but that horizontal bar definately suits it! Not the vertical ones though Cheers! Graham

How about a tube grille? Entirely in keeping with the style and age of the car, plus they look great!

Need to lose the overiders adn spotlights though. Can't find a better shot of this car but there's a Mk 2 in the middle of this bunch. Can't remember what the grille bar is/was though.

The vertical bars are different, I'll give you that. I have no idea how well they would work IRL.
A horizontal tube grill is a classic mod for these kind of cars.
The floating single bar looks classy and is less often seen.
I also like the idea of drawer knobs. Get down B&Q and have a look, you could make something up like a '58 Buick grill LOL.
An accessorised stock grill but painted in a mid gold satin, would look lilke gold anodise, (Plastikote do one) give it that late 50s DeSoto vibe.
Just don't do the "mini bumper with a dozen over-riders on it" to try make a '54 Chevy lookalike grill. I never really liked them, and they were done to death years ago.

Personally I'd keep it standard...although it'd be interesting to see what it would look like painted black. Modifying cars isn't just about changing stuff, it's about changing stuff for the better. If you feel a new grille is the way to go, the that's cool, but changing something that works just for the hell of it is where so many cars go wrong. Do what you want, but think about it first (which is of course the reason you posted this thread! ;D). Personally I like the grille - it's clean and simple...if it were my car the grille would stay, but the spots, overriders and visor would all be on ebay by now! ;D ps. I've moved the topic to the general board, because it's about the grille, not the car. You could have added it to your original thread, or put it here where you'll probably get more people seeing it anyway. retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=1169672740&page=1
