I'm booking the Polo in for an MOT soon (hoping to have it done week after next). This will be the first time I've prepared a car for an MOT, so I need a bit of help.
What preparations should I make? What should I check? What do the stations tend to be strict on?

Well the basic stuff is checkin' all you lights are workin' the horn, all the tyres have good tread depth, check the exhaust isn't blowing, thats the basic stuff i check, the rest is beyond me.
Hope this is of some help. ;D

generally looking like the car is well cared for and looking like you care... Psychologically this puts the tester on your side and some stuff which is a borderline fail will become an advisory...

things brought up on polos we've put through MOT recently are...
brake pipes, persished fuel lines to tank, leaking fuel tank at filler neck, emissions, beam adjustment to headlamps, perished tyre, driveshaft boot, pitting to brake discs.
that's mk1/2/3 polos one of which had been sat for nearly 2 years, all went through after a saturday afternoon's tinkering.

Yeah, check all the obvious stuff and make sure everything works and fluids are all topped up. I use it as a good excuse to do a general service on the car including things like oiling locks/hinges etc. and greasing the suspension though that won't be applicable to your car. I don't usually try and "test" the suspension as I prefer to leave that to the guy who knows what he's doing and I'm not going to re-build any of it until I'm told I have to! It could be worth jacking the car up and listeneing to the wheel bearings when spinning the wheels - any grumbling is bad news, though don't mistake any light brake rubbing as bearing noise... "Strictness" really depends on the individual tester and their attitude to your car. Might help if you wash it so it looks well cared for! Also, try and watch him do the test if you can so that you know what he is looking at and for. Then you'll know what to look out for next year or if there's areas of the floor that might need fresh underseal or something.

Thanks guz. Brake pipes were replaced by Minion, and are all fine. Fuel lines I will check. Emissions, is there any was to check it? Or just set the mixture as lean as possible? Headlights: Up against the garage door and make sure they all point the right direction? Driveshaft boots and brake discs are brand new. Adam

Or just set the mixture as lean as possible? Lean is not always best for emissions - if it's running OK and giving reasonable mpg - leave well alone Rest is all the usual silly stuff - all lights work and seatbelts secure

I've found nice fresh oil helps with emissions - if the old oil is dirty and its been sat there some time it could mess with the emissions. Besides, it's always good to do an oil change I've found certain garages have particular "things" they like to fail cars on. Maybe it's just coincidence, but both my old Volvo and the Golf failed on rusted brake pipe ferrules, at the same garage. I think MOT testers are a little bit stricter since all this big brother computerised nonsense came into effect.

fiddling with emissions/headlamps i'm happy to ask the guy to do if they crop up as wanting some attention during the test, less hassle. give it a good thrash there, if its been standing a while i'd add some fresh petrol and change the fuel filter.

The thing is... the MOT centre is about 200yrds down the road. I could find a longer route though Okay... fresh petrol, new oil, new fuel filter, nice run and it should be okay. Adam
