It was the mid 1970s and I was mabey 5 or 6 years old. I was sitting in the car in the parking lot while Mom shopped for groceries (remember when a kid could do that?) Now in those days, over here in the U.S., the streets were overflowing with muscle cars still being used as daily transport. There might have been a Hemi Road Runner or a Chevelle LS6 parked next to Mom's VW Bug; but at that age I hadn't learned to appreciate those yet. They pretty much blended in with all the other Satellites, Malibus, Torinos, and Cutlasses and such. But when this rolled by, I sat up and took notice! . It would be a few years before I learned it had been a late '50s Chrysler; but even then I knew I was looking at something special. It was like watching a one float parade. As big as a river barge and silent as a ghost. Not a speck of dirt or rust anywhere. Driven by a little old lady, of course. She probably bought it new, kept it garaged ,and drove it 10 miles a week. I've loved the style of those late 50s dreamboats ever since. Good memories, indeed. Brian

For me, I was a child of the 80's and loved cars, but it was the 90's before it all started to click. So road cars that started to catch my eye looked like this - This was the turbo era, racing technology from F1, Group C and Group B was filtering down to road cars by this point and all the manufacturers had a 'Turbo' model at the top of the tree. This is what I blame my obession with forced induction on, everything has to have a blower on it

Two of my youngest retro-related memories from the early 70s: We were driving past a local car showroom and I saw a car with a window sticker with FOUR FIGURES. I remember thinking it was the most expensive car in the world - a whole thousand quid It might have been a Talbot This could have been at Bolton Show. The sort of thing were you get cake baking competitions, livestock show, a display by the White Helmets, Boy Scout parade, giant marrows, etc. There were a load of custom cars on display as well. CF vans with murals, slot mags and buttoned velvet interiors. That kind of stuff. One thing I clearly remember is being given a Rainy City Cruisers sticker. My dad wouldn't stick it in his window. I must have been about 6.

One of the advantages of being old is remembering cars that others regard as classics when they were new. Starting in 1950's my father had a Austin Devon van at around 5 years old with rear seat and side window conversion and then there was the Ford 100E as his first company car that was replaced with a Mini van when they first became available. That was replaced with several Anglia vans then and Anglia estate followed by MKI Cortina. Promotion meant a step up to Corsairs for the next couple then a J reg MKIII Cortina 2000GT via TC Harrisons - father had ordered a MKII 1600E Cortina but production had ceased so got one of the first 2000GT's instead. 2 door in Garnet with black rear panel. Next was an L reg Morris 1800 that lasted probably 15 years as a company car. My father liked it so much it got put away in the garage at his office when he had a Consul (MKI Granada shape) and dragged out every so often as a back up car when the main car was out of order or given to another employee to use. Other than the Devon everything else was brand new !

My first car memory was sitting on my uncle Bert's lap steering his Rover P4 down the road when I was about 5 or 6 in the late '60's. ;D Sadly he sold it for peanuts and it ended up being bangered. This isn't the actual car but one I borrowed from Google. Still bl**dy lovely though.

First car I remember was my Dad's Austin A50; would have been about 1961 (which really dates me!), shortly before it was changed for a Hillman Minx... Remember walking past the Ford showroom on my way to school and being totally mesemerised by a then brand new MkIII Zodiac in gleaming white rotating slowly on a turntable - yes, I was late for school that day! Following two photos are from Croyde Bay a few years later, typical of what I grew up with...

Lada Riva 1200 estate, Next door had a 59 mini from new in a lovely mid minty blue, over the road was a Armstrong Whitley and a split window VW, and various Fiats, a new one every 2 years 100es. My own stock started with a 3.6 Ford pilot, Mk3 ZZ farnham estate, over 22 Anglia 105e in various forms of modification, all models of the Cortina range, Mk 1 ZephyrV8. Following the A50, Dad had the Hillman Minx, his first company car, which was followed by another one then he got one of the first MkI Cortina 1500s (senior sales rep, the rest got 1200s). Then he got promoted to Sales Manager, in South Africa... First car out there was a Chyrsler Valiant (inline 6), then he got the new Ranger (SA built FD Ventora but with Opel rear lights). Final car before he decided to jack it all in and come back to Blighty and run a pub was a '71 Pontiac Parisienne, absolute whale of a thing! Meanwhile, Mum had a Renault Dauphine (pile of poo!) followed by a 105E Anglia - which we brought back to the UK with us and eventually (in 1976) became my first car. SA introduced me to Yank cars, beach buggys, drive-in movies and, most importantly, hot rods. Parents have regretted it ever since - LOL!

A couple of early car memories. When I was a kid a guy down our road had a yellow TR7. I loved it but my dad said they were rubbish. He was wrong. There was also a woman nearby who had a black capri laser when they were pretty unfashionable cars. I recall a scorching summer and her wearing cut down denim shorts and driving it with bare feet. Thinking about it now she sounds like my perfect woman My dad also had a string of Cotina Mk4 & 5s as company cars which I spent many happy weekends being carted around the country in the back of. Happy days Meanwhile my mother drove a white Allegro 1600 Sprint which burnt your legs on the black vinyl interior during summer. On one memorable occasion she managed to drive it into the road sign outside our house

I had a good role model. That was taken in 1967, can still remember the smell of that car even now. We caravanned throught my childhood/youth, so that '58 Zeph was followed by a string of big Brit barges (Mk2/3 Z-cars and latterly a PC Cresta) right through the 70's. By 1977, Daddy Damaged had cottoned onto the considerable abilities of Pinto-powered Cortinas as towcars. That one (a 2000GXL) had Spax shocks fitted all round and estate void bushes to tame the wallow. Was a brilliant towcar, replaced only in 1980 when he discovered Peugeot 504's....hence the 505 sat on my drive at the minute, and the love of Gallic tat we both still share. Disgusting strides, though. ;D

My Old dads Humber Sceptre Taken around 1977 A car which I felt was incredibly posh due to its wooden dash and door cappings Remember him buying it part exing his MK1 capri gt and having to borrow £50 of my Uncle Tom as the capri came up short in the deal My Uncle Johns Renault Fuego (spelt wrong I think?) was the first new car I ever sat in resembled a space ship to me with fabric seats not the cold/ hot vinyl ones Second one was aforementioned Uncle Tom who brought a Lada Riva back in '78 and my dad forever taking the mick out of him (something about Cold wars hadnt a clue what a cold war was, apart from thinking someone was fighting in the artic)

One of my earliest memories full stop was of my mum's brown Talbot Alpine. I was about 3 years old, it was a very hot summer's day and I was enjoying an ice-cream. I can vaguely recall going to lean against the wing, but remember clearly the feeling of my tiny hand going straight through the rotten panel and getting stuck. I don't remember the flavour of ice-cream, but I know it ended up on the floor.
Talbot Alpine; the child catcher.

One of my earliest memories was of my dad's old blue mk5 cortina estate, unloading shopping on a really warm summers day. Odly enough I now own a blue cortina estate too My aunties old mantas and orion as well as minis and the like are pretty clear too. Probably where my old car fascination began really.

I can remember my dad having a 1974 Opel Kadett, then a 1977 Opel Kadett, then a 1980 Opel Kadett. Then he moved on to a Nissan Bluebird and a Austin Maestro VP in opaline green with the talking dash..Happy days that was me growing up in the 70's and 80's he passed the Maestro on to me in around 92 but it wasn't cool for a 22 year old at the time so it went for a Sierra, more fool me as the sierra was a dog.

Old cars i remember - being strapped in my booster seat in my dads brown Maxi 1500, which lasted 8 days out of the show room before being rear ended by a 2.8 Granada while stopped at the lights, sending us out into a cross road and us being hit from the side by a double decker. Only injuries were whiplash and a few glass cuts!! it was replaced with a dark blue 1750 maxi for 4 years until it was replace with a 1984 Maestro VDP in dark blue with a talking dash (1.6 R series, with carb and starting issues - uprated to twin carbs off an MG fixed it!blue interior - lasted to 100K in 1992 - it was rotten A802KNB) it was given to my uncle who needed a car and my dad bought his first Volvo 740 GLE 2.3 estate, but my sister bent it in 2003 a week before my wedding - since replace with an 850 estate. I remember wanting a mk2 golf GTi, astra GTE's Cavlaier SRi130's Cosworth, Viva HS, Capri's, Xr2's after seeing them go passed when in the back of my dads cars. and then moving onto my own cars
