I thought I'd have a go at carving myself a wooden toy car. I think it came out ok. The metal parts are cut out of coke cans, the wheels I had already. imageshack.us/g/1/9993424/

Well, I am impressed.
I would not take that on, and I like to play with wood.
Sapele/Meranti is reasonably easy to work with, but it is a bugga to finish off.
It is quite stringy.
I see you are over in Sevenoaks/Gravesend...... If you ever come down this way.... Allhallows direction, past Hoo St Werburgh, give me a shout, and I will let you have a rummage in my wood turning supply pile..... there is some Tulip, Oak, Pine/Douglas Fir and also some Meranti, maybe you find a piece or two that is right for the next car.

I used to make lot of wooden toys when my lads were young, well they were passed on to the youngest and then a few were passed on from him to friends kids, I built them to last This one I made for my eldest son when he was 3 and that would be have been 35 years ago it is about 11.5 inches long and currently sits in my "office"

That ^^ is indeed very nice. My Dad always made us wooden toys when we were little (A long time ago, but not before plastic toys, before anyone makes any sarcastic comments ) and they're still at my Mum's. They certainly last a lot longer though!
