Guys, i'd forgoten how good they are.
Ms Girl of Leisure has had my Mk2 GTi for a few months now, and i've not driven it much, but on a mission to go buy wine just now i was forced to go play in the lanes around Taunton Racecourse and damn it's a fine car. 8v, so it's got plenty of midrangeand it handles better than almost any car i've ever driven, and that includes some properly expensive stuff.
They go sideways nice too.....
If you've never had a Mk2 GTi go buy one, if you've got one take it out NOW and play properly.

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

I actually rate the 8v motor over 16vs.... only driven a 16V GTI but my Rocco had the 8v engine from early mk2s and they weigh about the same, the midrange grunt is awesome - stick it in 4th at 15mph and it pulls and pulls till you get pulled certainly capable of surprising a lot of newer stuff. still I suppose for thrashing purposes, trackday-style-driving a 16V has more balls.... looking on VZi recently and there's plenty of decent Mk2 GTIs for sub-£600 with tax and test. Even lower if you don't mind faded red paint! oh and I didn't realise how good the sideways action was till I went rally-driving in one... bit disappointed when I saw they'd lined up a pair of mk2s, thought they wouldn't slide - wrong! bum out on every turn.

Out of the many, many mk2 Golfs I've owned I've never had a GTi They've always been too much or too shagged. Shame really.

I have always got my eye out for the ultimate mk2 gti (imo) a black 3 dr 16v 92 model with all the lecky bits. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm i'd sell one of the kids for a mint one of those!

My girlfriend has a Mk2 GTi 8v, and I have to agree they are great little cars. Loads of torque, great handling and solidly built. They're a bit on the small side for me (I like my big heavy barges), but for blatting around country lanes and cities they're great!

They belt a good 'un A very good friend of mine had a D reg 8v K-jet - honked like anything - would probably still be with us if he hadn't hit an exhaust box on the m1 at 80mph.... the J reg 8v ( digifant ) he got after that was cleaner and just as quick - got it chipped at AMD too, must have been one of the last they did.... I drove it back from pontypridd to Watford after picking up his new mk1 and i haven't enjoyed many drives as much....125 and still pulling I seem to remember.... :-o In short - if you can find one in good nick that hasn't had curse word taking VW scene tax added to it.....BUY IT !

I missed out on a Fire and Ice left hooker a few weeks ago - it was so cheap but I didn't have the readies at the time I'm looking at a left hooker 1.3 at the moment as I'm going to be spending a fair amount of time on TEH continent this year - I'd have a GTI if one came up at the right price and with the steering wheel on the left

1988 Oak Green 3 dr Campaign here and I fooking love it. Stainless exhaust and induction kit to give it a little bit of extra poke and a 20mm drop is all its had done. I am sitting at my desk looking out the window lovingly at it right now. Its ace.

I'm craving a(nother) small bumper valver...

Indeed. People who put big bumpers on small bumper cars should be shot.
