Sorry this is a modern question ........ Looking at reluctantly replacing my ford puma with an mpv ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) . I need it to take to spain with me for 4 or 5 months each year. My poor puma has a useless boot. In an ideal world I'd be buying a renault avantime but after looking at a few they're just too fickle. So.... on the basis that the puma is a hoot and that ford generally knock out some decent motors, has anybody got a view? Looking at prices, I could get a 2.3i a lot cheaper than a tdi and I think it might be more 'fun'. I know someone with a reliable but seriously juicy v6. Net research seems to say the galaxy should be my preferred option for around the 3-4k mark.

as far as i know, the galaxy. and the the seat alhambra are the same thing underneath!
i would imagine the seat version would be cheaper. and the 2.3 in something that size wont be overly fun to drive, itl just be poor on fuel. diesel options gotta be the winner on a trip to spain!

I've got a 2001 Galaxy, 2.3 . it's versatile seatwise in the back. had all my bands gear in it and a suzuki gp100 . rear seats all come out individually.
fuel economy isn't great, but then it's not as bad as my old saab 2.3
they are surprisingly spritely for their bulk. the Seat alhambra and VW Sharan are the same.
it's good for loading up and crunching miles if you don't mind the fuel costs.

If you don't need the full time 7 seats buy a Zafira instead a much better all rounder.
I went from an Espace to a Galaxy to a Zafira and the Zafira was much better and well suited to nearly every thing I threw at it, from drag strips and track days to trips from home to Scotland via Wales.
We now have a couple of Discoverys but I wouldn't be upset if I had another Zafira.

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

Bizzarely we went from a Renault Grande Scenic 1.6 petrol manual, Zafira 1.8 petrol manual to a C4 Grand Picasso 1.6tdi semi-auto (so my nan's best friend could drive and they could go about together). All from brand new, but would rate the Zafira the worst. I spose in many way's it was the most car like, but the engine was gutless, and seemed less powerful than the 1.6 Scenic, definitely less willing to rev, and iirc did less to the gallon. The only one I have driven is the C4, which despite have a gearbox which is plain stupid is actually quite well made, perceived quality is high, and it's comfortable. The brakes are typically Citroen and "switch-like". My mates father has a MK2 Zafira like we had but with a bigger engine and it seems really nice, a lot nicer than ours was!

A mate had a TDI galaxy which was only running on 3 cylinders, upon closer inspection we found that a tappet had failed taking the cam lobe out with it ![](http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/shabber/IMAG1670.jpg) Seems to be a common issue on these vw TDI lumps so its worth checking the tappets for excessive wear before setting off to Spain in one

Why not go for an older one for a grand or so and keep the puma? The 98ish ones had the AFN diesel engine which can be chipped to 140bhp and nearly 300 torques and if you buy one with full service history and around 100,000 miles it will last forever. Go for a top spec one and you will get cruise and electric everything too. 40 mpg if you take it steady too.

Nice logic but it don't work with another tax, mot, Insurance and maintenance costs each year. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) The zafira 2.0 turbo looks like potential fun.
