I'm building an e21 BMW that will be converted to run an m52/2.8 engine and nitrous. The nitrous is just for occasional use but I'd really like to junk the original ECU and wiring loom. I know nothing about Omex, Megasquirt etc but was hoping someone could advise me on which system would work with the m52 and what the best budget option might be? Any help would be much appreciated please guys.

Megasquirt is pretty flexible and cost effective. Choosing the right hardware/firmware is becoming complex as more and more options emerge. Microsquirt seems to be getting popular but don't know much about it myself.
Canems is another possibility just slightly up the cost scale, then Emerald.

they'll all work to a point, firstly, find a GOOD mapper not too far away, and ask what their favoured system is, even better if you find a mapper who does not sell ecu's as part of their business... Megasquirt etc is all good if you're an electronics whiz and don't mind faffing, but in reality you wont save much in the end. DTA, Omex and emerald MBE are in a different league to Megaquirt, canems KMS, much more reliable and have decent dealer and manufacturer backup, then you have the next step up of proper full on motorsport kit, way out of you budget and needs however. I've got a DTA S40 for my project, 1) because I found it reasonably cheap on ebay.us, 2) they have a decent forum, 3) I know of a really good mapper who I want to enlist if he's available, (sandy brown) he maps all of JRE's engines recently, as well as his own builds, and if I can't get Sandy there's plenty others about that can and the software is very easy to use, might even have a crack myself

Thanks for replies so far guys.
I've mailed Canems direct and await a reply. Northampton Motorsport suggested an Omex ECU but it was over £800, before fitting, mapping etc so way out of my league.
Do you know anything about Dastek piggy-back ECU? Is that a viable alternative?

the Omex fitted to my TVR is great. but then its £1000+ vat and thats not including fitting and mapping (and any extra sensors needed)
sometimes decent standalones come up for sale on ebay - friend got one not too long ago it was a slightly lesser spec Omex to mine and was £300 ish including iirc some sensors too
also seen a few Emerald ecu's on ebay - and they're pretty good
as the poster earlier said, DTA are also excellent. a friend had one of these on a 400bhp pulsar gtir, and it did everything he wanted.

Emerald M3Dk, I used this system without problem, its pretty well covered for setting up across the country as its well known, For you I would think its a good system for you as it can support 3 set ups so you can run it for everyday usage, and at a flick of a switch you can run a ign retard programe for the nitrous
