Ok so i want my 1200 beasty to go a bit quicker as she topped out at 95 on the motorway. At some time i will put a 5 speed box on but i got a set of twin stromberg carbs with the car. I'm guessing this will beef up my acceleration more but hey, speeds speed. I have however been offered a set of Webber twin 40's for £150 quid. What i wanted to know was how can i tell what size my current carbs are? The only nmbers i can see on them are stamped and say... F6034L and F6034R Can anyone identify them?

Can't help thinking you're on a hiding to nowhere tuning the 1200. The Astra is a deceptively heavy car. I had the 1300S with the 4 speed box back in the day when they were fairly new cars (well we were still on the Mk2 then) and it could beat most of my mates cars (Mk2 Escort 1.3 Sport, Chevette, Mk1 Escort 1300E, etc.)
I would have thought an engine transplant was the way forward. 1.8 Cav motor & 5 speed will give you an "almost GTE" spec...

I agree that twin '40's would be overkill. The strombergs will give you some good extra pep without ruining you financially in terms of fuel costs. By all means buy the weber's, but then just pimp them on the bay and watch the bucks flow in. That should easily pay for alot of the other stuff you ca do to the car Anyway, 95 is fast enough

Wouldn't put two DCOE's on a stock 1200. It'll just be hassle, expense for the jets and throats and drain the tank. For an engine that small you'll almost certainly need a full set of jets, 4 different venturis and 4 throats which will set you back another £120-£150.

well 40's work on a 998 imp engine, if you get it all jetted up right they will be fine. looks like they are a matched pair by the numbers, and for £150 you could put the on ebay and make a bit back if it dosent work out

Yeah £150 is a really good price for a pair of Weber 40s! There was a good jetting calculator site I saw some time ago - I thought I'd bookmarked it but I can't seem to find it now. I think Street might now what it is though

£150 for the carbs. £150-200 for the jets, venturi's etc £100 on the rolling road to set it all up = £400+ for maybe 2 or 3 extra bhp. DCOEs need proper head, cam, exhaust mods to take proper advantage of the extra fuel available. Best bet is to slap en on ebay for extra cash.

Bazzer (not on this forum) tells me it pulls really hard everywhere but especially from about 4k revs up to well over 10k... Mind you, it is a road legal sprint car. "I'm"

my bro slapped twin weber 40 dcnfs onto his 1600 CVH, stock except a mild cam.... it gave 117hp on the rollers, stock is 96hp.
I slap his wrist and told him that to get the most from your 40s you need a decent head..... so he went out and bought a stage 3 head with 3 angle valves line dinner plates done by some ex for racing guy (armhed bajew or somthing!) a crazy cam, solid lifters, tubular manifold (which needs som modificaiton) vernier pulley and its in the process of being fitted then back off to the rollers.... there is also a freshly decked and bored 1640 block and brand new pistons waiting for a bottom end rebuild. I just wish he would hurry up!!!
my verdict, 40s on a 1200 wont improve your top speed, thats all upto final drive against the revs, make it scream to 10,000rpm, fit a 5th gear, and I'm sure you will see the crazy speeds that guy with a stock 'police spec' nova was claiming in the readers rides section!
in his words: 'YAAA RLY! 70mph in first gear...... its a 1litre fools, ofcourse its fast!' or somthing like that

Just how well do you think that is going to work on a siamesed intake head Fit the strombergs..... if they are the ones you got off nick - me - Nighmares - diff ;D they will make a significant difference I have a lumpy cam sat in a 1200 engine back home as well, which should along with the carbs perk it up a treat ;D It did in Nightmares Kadett thats for sure ;D Come and take it away and save me the hassle of skipping it I`ll be home on Sunday If you want it come and get it, I just want it gone
