Good morning fellow petrol sniffers
I've found a few old cars ( a morris something with a 2l badge on the boot a few others which I'm not sure what they were) all were rotten and hardly worth saving but my question is this
How could I transfer their registration to a car of mine? I've heard people saying the car must be mot'd (none of them were fit to even put on a transporter) so does anyone know the 'correct procedure'?

they do need an MOT to transfer the reg AFAIK.
We bought an old mk2 astra to take the plate off & had to get it tested first

Yeah, the car needs to have a valid MOT before you can rape it for the plate.

Not impossible though with a friendly MoT man and a bit of time. It only needs a little MoT at the time of the transfer and they don't ask to inspect them all. Needs to be able to be transported to VOSA for inspection though if required.

Legally you can't do it. Plus anything that been off the road for a significant amount of time then suddenly comes back with a request to transfer the plate is bound to flag up an inspection......I wouldn't risk my testing licence (if I had one) for it.

Ah well thats the plan out the window. It's a farmer I know with a load of old cars lying in one of his fields. I'd spotted a good number and thought it'd be worth investigating how it could be got. Must have a hunt round the cars and see if any could be made roadworthy

Must have a hunt round the cars and see if any could be made roadworthy I think this would make a better thread than one about transferring plates, seeing as we are essentially a Forum about keeping old cars alive. We love seeing abandoned stuff so some pics would go down well I'm sure. |

my mate did this but it wasnt cheap.
he has a mate whos a mot tester who did a ticket for it he then insured it for a year and taxed it for a year.after 10 months he then applied to swap the reg number at the local dvla office and it went through with no proplems.

I done it for my plate lots of welding ,painting all for a car that got a genuine mot before inspection etc then scrapped

The car requires MOT and also tax [although most desirable registrations are on exempt cars anyway], OR have had tax lapsed recently.

most of these cars aren't that old but because they were farmers cars that ended up in a field you can probably imagine their condition. Must try and get some pics next time i'm down that direction. I'm fairly sure he'd lend me the tractor for pulling them out too.

How does it work with per 1960 cars that don't need an MOT? You have to submit the car for an MOT before the DVLA will allow a transfer. |

Years ago, I was delighted to hear moaning from a guy I knew through the Mini clubs who'd 'rescued' a rusting 80s City with an interesting plate (prefix, one letter and then DOO or DOT, I think). He'd gone to the trouble of obsfucating the VIN on one of his own Minis and getting a dodge MOT on the interesting plate. The DVLA said it had already been reissued and gave him a boggo-standard prefix, three numbers, three letters plate. I think he had to say he'd scrapped it to avoid the road tax lettters he started getting about it. They didn't inspect the car though. |

Actually despite common missconceptions, it can be possible to transfer a plate without a valid mot, if you write a really grovelling letter to the dvla and find someone who is in a good mood!
My aunt managed to get her (relatively worthless) private plate back from a dead car sat on the drive with nothing more than a letter about it! She essentially explained that it wasnt practical to get the car re-mot'd to remove the plate, as it was now a foot or two shorter then designed thanks to some less than perfect driving! (mot expired since the accident)
The dvla wrote her a massive letter about how they don't normally do this etc etc etc, then the last few lines said something along the lines of "due to the special circumstances involved we are willing to make a acception in this case" and she got it back..... I suspect it helped that the plate had very little value to anyone other than her, and that she had been the registered keeper of a vehicle bearing that plate for the previous 20 years (or certainly as long as i can remember!)

If not I'm just going to get a dodgy MOT anyway so you might aswell save the hassle of inspecting the ringer I'm gonna build.
