RUST. Dodgy electrics, knackered engines. Iffy brakes. Busted gearboxes.
They can do big mileage if looked after.

Rust, as you say. Not sure of any particular areas. Later ones should be OK, but check for head gasket problems. Earlier ones used to suffer from head gaskets and also used to crack blocks between cylinders. Also check for any tappet noises, can be quite serious as the tappet guides can lift out of the head and be hit by the cam. Check for any knocks or clonks from the back axle, could just be the V mounts that hold the cage into the car, but I would imagine having to rebuild the back end would be quite expensive. The wishbones are mounted on needle roller bearings with rubber seal on the outsides. If the seals go, I would guess it wouldn't take long for the bearing to get contaminated and wear out. Not trying to put you off or anything!

Rust around the bottom of the front & rear screens, lower front wings and sills are the danger zones. A potential world of pain. One of the best looking cars evAr IMO.

My mothers old S Type Jag had a problem with the gearstick detaching when sometimes going into or out of reverse.
Engine packed up, and had to be rebuilt, but other than that a very solid rock heavy motor.

look for any condensation in the boot area, if there is walk away they will rot out from the inside quite quickly a replacement rear bumper is about a grand new plus fitting and check around the headlights, lower bonnet and lower boot edges good rot spots

82-84 s3 sovereigns are the best buy with the 4.2 if you really want one then get one out of the owners club mag thats been in a heated garage on carpet ;)i paid good money for mine and it never missed a beat ran it for a summer thern got fed up of feeding it with £90 a tank(2) full and sold it with a small loss ,but a cheap one thats had any paint is a lemon.no such thing as a good cheap jag I'm afraid .no one with all their marbles is going to do a decent job of body repairs as everyhing is a pain to get at its a days work to sort the handbrake out on a s3

Ask your dad surely? Or are his a good example of what not to buy? Check the fuel tanks both work and you can switch between them. This is expensive to rectify if theres a problem. Cars runing on only one tank may have one tank rotten out and they are pricey to replace.
