hi
I am after some help and advice. My Imp should run a 4 speed transaxle box but the Saxo Engine i am using is transverse. Does anyone know a suitable 5 speed tranverse box that would suit my project. I had been told a renault 5 box would suit but the mk1's are very rare.
All help and advice greatly appreciated.

Don't know any that will be the right way round. In a normal FWD one it'd need to allow the diff to be flipped so the drive is the right way.

renualts used to be inline, engine behind the gearbox type affairs, i think some lotus's used the 21 gearbox for example, other than that I think you are limited to VW, Porsche or something from a race car maybe. Most transverse FWD stuff has the engine ahead of the gearbo hence most conversions ending up midmounted rather than rear mounted, unless as mentioned above you can find one that can have its diff flipped over and then mount it all backwards.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

A porsche box is massively overkill for the power and torque you will produce. No need to waste money when a Beetle box will do what you want for much less cost.

What exactly are you trying to do? Mount the Saxo engine longitudinally (along the car, as per the standard Imp engine)? Or mount the Saxo engine across the engine bay? Athough the engine's mounted transversely (across the car) in a Saxo, it doesn't have to be transverse in the Imp - that just depends on how it's fitted and what gearbox you use. If you want it longitudinal, you need a transaxle (nothing to do with transverse, BTW - 'transaxle' is a concatenation of TRANSmission and AXLE) with a similar layout to the Imp box. Me, I'd be looking at Porsche - they are about the only thing that has continued with a longitudinally mounted rear engine setup for long enough to have moved on from 4 speed boxes. Won't be cheap though. That said, late rear-engined Skodas were 5 speed. Nothing's going to be an easy bolt-in swap - they are all FAR bigger than the (tiny) Imp box, most of them use CV joints, etc. Fitting something else is going to be a major undertaking involving cutting out the tunnel under the rear seat - and probably losing the rear seat. If you want it transverse, you need to cut a lot more of the shell out - to mid-mount the engine - and will probably need to fit different rear suspension to give you space for the engine. If this is where you want to go, wait until after the National so you can have a look at Pat's K-series Imp (which uses an MGF rear subframe - complete with suspension - along with the MGF engine and gearbox). In addition - and please don't take this the wrong way - I have a feeling that this project is beyond your capabilities at the moment: you seem to be asking for advice on quite basic issues, which suggests that you might not have the experience and leanred problem-solving required for a complex engine swap. It'd be a shame to see another Imp come up for sale as an unfinished engine-swap project, with huge holes chopped out of the floor and nothing to show for it. Add in the complication and expense of needing to bIVA the thing after chopping that much metal out, and I wonder just how worthwhile this particular project is. That said, I do like the idea of Imps with engine swaps - so I hope you do manage to make it work and see it through to completion. ;D Just don't over-strecth yourself - it's frustrating and can be an expensive learning experience.

Mk1 Renault 5 boxes are the correct configuration for your needs. They come in 4 and 5 speeds but arent very strong. Same applies to many Renaults of that period - 16s, 18s etc.
A hybrid drive shaft can be made by chopping and welding the respective shafts, but the boxes aren't particularly strong unless you go for the big UN1 box.
An IRS beetle box will work too but is 4 speed and has naff ratios.
An early Porker box (915 iirc) would work, but has a dog leg first.

A possible option is the passat/a4 box, fitted upside down, seems to becoming popular in the vw van world, try the brickyard forum in diesel modifications Ttfn Glenn Ps 6 speed also available AFAIK

Realistically you are going to modifiying the shell so BIVA test due and probably Q reg / loss of any tax exemption and option of classic insurance anyway. With that in mind why not go the "full hog" and mid engine ?

Go to r5gordini.co.uk you will be able to get an HA1 gearbox and linkages there and not get ripped off.HA1 boxes are from the Gordini Turbo so you wont have any weakness issues. You will probably have to lose the saxo lump and go for a GT turbo instead to make life easier,or be really cheeky and find a Clio 16v.
