My car is tax exempt and SORN'ed, hopefully it'll pass it's MOT on Monday.
I'll then de-SORN it, I'm guessing that it's still illegal to drive without a tax disc on view?
Even though I've done the business on-line and it really is in the post!

at the post office you will need the insurance docs and the mot sheet. the post office have no access to the dvla online checker.
you can tax it online, but you won't have the 'grace' period of a few days and the car has not been continuously taxed, so you might get stung for the 'non displaying' offence if you get spotted.

I've just realized that the old tax disc is still in date, I sorned the car because the insurance had run out, will that count?  |

If you taxed it on-line today the tax should run from 1st Jan so you should be OK. Print off the page that confirms you have taxed it and keep that in the car until the disc arrives. This way, if you do get stopped you can prove it's all kosher.
If a traffic warden sends a report to the DVLA when your car is unattended by the time they receive it their systems will show the car was in fact covered at the time.
The main problem would then be failing to display a disc to which you have mitigating factors (taxed but disc not arrived).
