Morning all, Been browsing the web for a while looking for info on how I change my 1958 Hillman Minx to free tax... last on the road in the 1980's when they paid for tax... I'd rather not... So far I've only found people saying, wait until you have an MOT... well what if the car is MOT exempt??? I am hoping to get an inspection anyway, but will they still provide a certificate... and once I have one, where do I go from there.... Any info or links would be great Thanks in advance Matt

I took my mini logbook over to the lisencing office, they gave me a form to ammend it, filled it in and then printed a new one while i was there. Pretty good service but i was queing out the door for about 1 and half hours...
I did have an MOT though at the time.
I only found out that it was still PLG when i went happily along to tax it, gutted was an understatement when the lady said 'that will be 112 pounds please'.
I would ask the garage that checks it to sign on headed paper as proof or maybe this time just pay for the MOT. Hope this helps, Adam.

if you can, pay to tax it, dvla will do the rest, new v5c with tax change and refund the tax paid. can be done at post office(maybe online?) could be easier than going to local dvla office.

Last time I did a car that had not been taxed for ages and wasnt MOT'd i had to go to the local tax office where they checked that the registration number had not been reissued to anyone else, they then issued me a new V5 complete with the free tax status. I would make sure to mention its tax and MOT free status to whoever you speak to on the desk and they should sort it all out when entering the details into the computer.

Isnt there still a bit on the V5 to change the taxation class? I just sent mine off for my bug and that was that. came back as historic.
the one time i forgot to with my bay was the one time they didnt. Had the same problem as above and had to go pay for tax...
Dvla wont do themselves out of money by being nice and doing it for you.

My '72 Rover was last on the road in 1980, and I had the V5 with PLG still on it. I think you can change the tax class through the post but I went to a DVLA office and they changed it for me there and then and I walked out with a free tax disc in my hand I would guess that you need a valid MOT still to get the tax disc in the first place?

Don't need anything apart from the V5c... Run down to your local tax office, fill out the form and they'll send you your new V5c when it's done.
I've heard of tax-ing it (and forking out the fee) and some how the tax class gets changed (not sure if DVLA do it automatically of whether you have to send the form etc and they refund you after...)

they will only do it when you go to tax it, preferably at a local DVLA offic before they shut !! otherwise if you try at a PO you need to tax it and then wait for arefund, last time i taxed an MOT exemp vehical i just filled in an MOT exemption form and handed it in with the other paperwork but that was years ago on a moody recovery truck

Yup just went to local dvla place with my insurance, filled in the mot exemption (half lift recovery vehicle over 3500kg) and walked out with a tax disk
also, how do you mean your car being mot exempt? You do know it has to be mot'd to get the exemption? You cant just drag a pile of rust out of a field, tax it and put it at the side of the pavement

you can drag one out of a field and tax it, but you cant park it at the side of the road unless its road legal, road legal NOT meaning taxed and insured, but meaning complies with construction and use and road safety regs.
you can still get nicked for bald tyres for example even if the car is parked, its rare, but it can happen.
