Can anyone recommend an insurance company that will insure a classic as your daily, (meaning)
- drive daily (obviously) - might not have access to another vehicle - will commute to work (single location)
I do have the above insurance on my MK3 escort cab, I am looking at getting a MK3 golf GTI, and most classic insurance companies are saying 1)a 98 car is not old enough 2)i must have access to an alternative vehicle that must be newer than the 98 golf 3) the golf cannot be used for commuting
or a mixture of points 1,2,3 above
Currenlty paying £300 for escort, now getting quotes of £800, plus for the golf, by merely changing the car, no other details. That's if I can even get a quote.
(will try to find some appropriate pictures to add)

been "playing" using compare the market, as it's easy to quickly compare changes - changing from a 16v gti to a 8v gtt, knocks just over £100 off - removing communiting, knocks off £20 ( thought it would have a bigger effect) - adding the wife as a named driver, knocks off £30 - upping the voluentry excess from 100 to 300, reduces the cost by £40 (not worth it but thought it would have more effect) - adding a thatcham alarm and immobiliser made no difference? ?

Footman James insure my 2.6 190E as my daily, and it's cheaper than the 2010 Fiat 500 1.2 Sport it replaced (£250 as opposed to £350!).

Brentacre are worth a shout. I was looking at classic policies for my polo (daily use) but forgot about them completely when they gave me an unlimeted milage modified policy about 40% cheaper.

I can't help but think that maybe it's just that a mk3 golf being used for daily driving simply isn't a classic car. The classic insurance companies aren't interested because they keep their premiums low by targeting a specific profile of customer who they know to be low risk, and you don't really fit that profile when using a 1998 hatch-back to commute.
As the other guys have said, try some of the other companies who are 'specialists' but not specific to classic cars. I've always had good experiences with Brentacre too. If the car's modified or you just want the option to mod it with no change to the cost then they're well worth a go. They do seem to get less competitive the older you get and the more mundane your car is. HIC seem to get better as you get older, I nearly went with them this year but Brentacre matched their quote so it was easier to just stay with them. Plus you'll start building no claims if you use normal insurance, which is always a good thing.
