MoT type questionarthurbrown

Right then...
Say I want to take a car for an MoT. And the engine is freshly hoiked from another vehicle... Obv. engine number won't match with the V5 and presumably the MoT computery thing system.
Is this a problem? Is anyone bothered??
Especially of the 'donor' on the 'recipient' were two 'identical' vehicles, same colour spec yadda. Would this set off some bells?
No?
Even if the recipient was a pre-73 and the donor post-73? And the donor was a vehicle that had a current MoT on the system...?
(Anyone see where I'm going with this???)

if the engines the same cc and spec i cant see a problem as on the mot i believe the only numbers that apply are the chassis num and reg number. a lot of cars have engine numbers in diffrent locations anyway, behind alternators manifolds ect

Won't be a problem. The engine in my 99 has been changed twice - the V5 shows presumedly the original number, then when I got it it had a melted piston and other residual damage. So I took a later 16v injection engine and turned it into an 8v carb engine - so the engine numbers aren't even remotely close!
Two MOT's later, all is well.

I get where you're going... it might set some alarms off in their head but what can they do?

I don't think checking the engine number is part of the MOT so you should be fine - its just the chassis number they need to identify the vehicle. The V5 should contain the correct information though so best to send it off and get it changed over once you're done.

I've never met an MoT tester who checked engine numbers. I've even found one who simply put N/A on the form for the Chassis Number because it's an old car and he really couldn't be bothered to find it. Caused no end of aggro with the DVLA that did because they then wrote to me and tried to make everything tie up...

Never seen an MOT tester check an engine number ever. They've no reason to.

they've never checked the one in my bug, and that's different from the V5..... I very much doubt they'd care even if they looked.

They are supposed to check the engine type number (this is needed for the emissions test check, but only usually opn later model cars) and if the VIN is in anyway incorrect they are supposed to locate and check other numbers I think, but basically you get passed on for a VIC with the DVLA if that happens. When the computer MOT first came out a mate of mine who is a testewr had a queue of angry customers because they'd have VIC notices on their cars, almost all of them were early 90s Fords, we think that the local Ford main dealer just chimped-up registering them when they were new. Things like the VIN on the V5C is two digits shorter than the real VIN on the car.
Most of these issues should be over and done with now as the DVLA computer has had more than a year to recieve the updates from all the cars with bodged details.

When I took my 1500 in for it's MOT I had to rush home and get the donor's old V5 so he could correlate the engine numbers and information off that onto the new computerised system and update the new V5C with the relevant information on the system.... As AlistairK mentions though - this was almost a year ago now
