Not a retro question but hopefully the mods will indulge me.
My wife's '03 Volvo S40 has decided to turn the engine management warning light on today coupled with a distinct drop off in performance. I'm thinking this might be the time to invest in some kit to read the fault codes rather than guessing what might have caused it or, shock horror, paying someone.
From what little I know it's an OBDII set up but there are a million different readers out there ranging from £5 kit from Hong Kong to stuff costing hundreds. There's also an android phone app but I don't know what I need to hook up the phone to the car.
Any advice on how to extract the fault code(s) gratefully received.

I think it's probably worth buying the gear as 'er indoors' cars aren't going to get older.

I got a genuine (there are a lot of Chinese copies about on eBay for similar prices to genuine so be wary) Autel MS509 and am happy with that other then it doesn't cancel airbag warning light so I had to buy another (sub £20) unit to do that.

Paul H Same here, works as well as the bluepoint one i have as well and the live data collection is a great help to isolate problems

Torque is good and works with a Bluetooth elm interface (£15 for a clone from the bay) but does nothing more than engine codes. Very very good for live data though!

If you can get an Autel MaxiTrip TP100 then it can be left in situ on dash top to give "live" data like MPG, engine temp, volts, rpm etc

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Paul H how can you tell if they are copies or genuine? as they only vary in price by a few quid
