Where to start, well I bought this car around 6 months ago with the intention of using it as a winter car, got it through an MOT and can happily say it should now go through several more without incident, past few MOTs the only advisories were corroded brake pipe (now replaced) Tyres (now replaced) and Rusty exhaust (now replaced). Sorted the emissions which were high, it's now sat perfectly. It's quite a nice sorted car mechanically with very few issues. I'm driving the car to and from work daily and it is fantastically reliable and quite good fun to drive as it will be with the 7a engine.
I've had around a dozen of these over the years, this isn't the best and it isn't the worst. I'll go through the positives and negatives in a sec. In short though it's cosmetically ok, you could cheerfully run it as is, the paintwork is quite fine, but there are little marks around the car if you look for them, but nothing scary. Interior is much the same, no tears or rips, no cig burns, no actual damage, a good interior valet would see the interior pretty nice, the crystal velour fitted to these cars cleans up well with a bucket of warm soapy water, it holds dirt very well so expect the bucket to turn black several times.
Mechanically the suspension, brakes, steering, clutch and engine are all spot on, bar the usual Audi knock from the front end, to this end I have a pair of new shocks and top mounts which will either go with the car or if I get chance be fitted, anyone who has had one of these cars knows they all knock to a greater or lesser degree, it's nothing to worry about it's just the design of the top mounts, they don't even fail MOT as it doesn't induce play.
The car also comes on a pristine set of 10 spoke speedlines fitted with brand new matching winter/snow tyres. Imagine how awesome this is in the snow, Quattro 5 cylinder on winter tyres with diff lock, it's addictive you just find yourself heading out to find abandoned roads to play the rally driver!
So in depth:
Pros-
Long MOT (nearly a year)
Long Tax (nearly 6 months)
Low risk, someone else (me) has done the hard work to get it through MOT and got the car reliable and trustworthy.
New winter tyres.
New suspension for the front (either included or fitted).
Pretty tidy car, not mint but tidy.
Everything works, electric windows, sunroof, quattro system, even the ABS which never works!!
Newish Genuine Audi Exhaust fitted (circa £800 from Audi new) with stainless decat (proper one not a bit of straight pipe, totally MOT legal due to age of car and car flies through emissions) and tubular manifold.
Glorious 7a engine, 170BHP standard, every one I've had has put in over that figure on the rollers, this one should be well over as it has the later ECU with the early tubular manifold and decat, it feels lively (which is unusual for a Quattro) so I'd guess at least 180BHP from experience.
Before I got this car I bought a new brass distributor gear to replace the nylon one, these give a warning before stripping with a chuntering sound from the rear of the engine, usually for around 20k before finally going, the issue is actually caused by thrust washer wear and the nylon gear can't cope with being out of mesh. However this car has already been done by the sound of the engine, it is the sweetest 7a I've ever come across, short of a good service I've had to do nothing to it!
Very easy to drive and not bad on fuel depending how you drive 30 ish is achieveable.
Comes with a wonderfully retro Blaupunct Stereo radio cassette fitted (original equipment) and a decent history file, haynes manual and from memory the original book pack. Comes with 2 keys which match all the locks on the car.
Cons -
Suspension knocks at front see above
Bodywork isn't mint but it's a 22 year old car, it's very good considering the age of the car, ditto the interior.
I need to fit another speedo binnacle to the car (I already have this it will be fitted in the next few days)
As you can see I'm scraping the barrel a bit on cons!!
At the same time don't go imagining this is a mint car, it isn't, it's not a garage queen, it's being driven daily and could do with a good valet, likewise there will be bits and pieces of problems that you will almost certainly encounter, it is a retro car at the end of the day. But from my experience they like to be used and problems should be few and far between, I'm open to offers and just want to see the car go to a decent home that's going to enjoy it, I bought my first coupe some years ago now as I fell in love with the looks, I knew nothing about them at the time, I soon fell in love with the driving of the car, the 5 cyl engines are a delight, and the gearboxes and mechanicals lovely. The reliability and build quality is also fantastic, these were built at the time the Germans were building the best cars in the world, Porsche were producing solid well built cars that lasted forever, Mercedes were world renowned for the E class and Audi B3 and B4 models were solid and reliable and felt like they were hewn from Granite.
So make me an offer, I'd like around £1050 for the car, I think it's realistic considering the work gone in to the car so far, but takes in to account it probably wants a bit of time and money spending on cosmetics and prettying up. I sold my last 10v coupe (2wd) for a fair bit more but it was mint, and my 90 20v sport for a lot more but again it was seriously special. This car can easily get to be like those cars with a bit of work and if I was keeping it it would end up like them as I tend to be pretty anal with my cars.
Why am I selling it? Well I don't need it, and to be honest I need the money, I'm respraying my 944 at the moment and any money from this car will just go in to nice bits for that one.
If any Scottish members are interested in the car, I am looking at a set of Porsche wheels up in Scotland for my car, if someone would pick them up on the way down I'd do a decent deal on the car as it would save me time and hassle going up to fetch them.
Photos taken on a very cold frosty Sunday morning at 7am up Olivers mount just after I got the car on the road, did 200 miles that morning all the way up in to North Yorks found some snow and it was sheet ice up to Olivers Mount, the car just goes through anything. Didn't miss a beat the whole drive.
