wheres the cheapest place to get 5% argon mix welding gas in leeds?
best i found so far is half size bottle at 137 bar for £69 plus £80 fully returnable deposit on bottle.
boc wanted £70 for bottle with £105 yearly rental for half size bottle at 230 bar i think

This place is a Hobbyweld stockist. www.westyorkshireautogas.com/index.htmlI recently changed from a BOC contract to Hobbyweld. I paid £50 deposit and about £30 for a refill. Pressure is only 137bar rather than the 200bar of the BOC bottle. But, for someone like me who only does a bit of welding, the higher gas cost is more than offset by the lack of rental fees.

what gas did you get from hobbyweld? I'm after a 5% argon mix as it produces bmuch stronger welds than co2 on its own which can produce brittle welds (so I'm told)

Is the hobbyweld stuff the same as Adams gas? they sell it from a garden center in Rothwell (Rothwell Garden Center). They do a 5% mix at £35 a re-fill and £50 returnable deposit. I have been using this and think it is great! some people swear by CO2 but not for me! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Either seems a good deal. I'd just go with whichever one has the nearest stockist to you.

got to take into account cylinder sizes tho! vambo- the one youve got is a 9kg cyylinder? and the one from hobbyweld is essentially a pub's co2 gas bottle but filled with 'argoshield'

try energas, i signed up for a 5 year deal at the start of this year, it was about £150+vat thats for a 20litre bottle (i think they call it a midi) which is a reasonable size , refils are about £30+vat if you go to a main depot, more if you go to a distributor as they add on an £11 handling fee. even if the main depot seems miles away ring and ask about distributors, there may be one on your doorstep.
watch out for the rent free ones, refils can be expensive and also ask about the charge pressure, some are only about 120bar, the likes of BOC/airproducts/energas will be around 200bar, put simply an extra 50% of extra gas in some cases.
i did some graphs based on cost/volume of gas and renal fees, i worked out that if i use 1 bottle a year the above was best for me, i had to get into about 4 bottles a year to consider a contract with the big boys and the large bottles. the rent free ones were only any good if the usage was 1 bottle every 3 years.

The BOC bottle holds more gas as it's at much higher pressure. It all depends how much you're going to use it though - the rental costs soon dwarf the gas costs if you only do the odd bit of welding.
