I've just realised the extent of my retro-minded-ness. My brother's just bought himself a 355 Ferrari ( the excuse being that it's (also) for use to hire out as a wedding car to get the groom to church!) so I willingly volunteered to be an occassional wedding driver and so I'm insured for it. so today was my first tentative drive in the beast. Fab fun! (altough I'm glad I've previously done a couple of Audi track days at silverstone in quick Audis) after taking it easy on greasy roads for the first few miles, I then allowed myself to enjoy her performance a little more - rather bizzarely - with the car's owner sitting next to me encouraging me - much fun was had and a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I understand why it's a SUPERcar, and here comes the retro content.... shouldn't have driving home afterwards in my W123 merc estate felt like a let down? I sure it should have done - but it didn't just a different kind of fun: i.e. 'chilled slow cruising', not 'OH MY GOD WOO HOO' Oh dear - no hope for me then ;D

:)You're not alone here feeling like that, I prefer my old Skodas to any modern and supposedly "better" cars I've driven.

I think it happens to everyone. after driving the mazda for a while and not driving the buggy, i noticed how heavy the steering was in the buggy and how slow it was. still didnt stop me having a corking good larf!
whats the script with renting cars? I had a hair brained scheme a while ago involving buying an old american car and renting it out limo stylee. ie for weddings etc. it was purely an excuse to buy yet another car, but long slow days at work meant I thought about it quite a bit and got quite interested in how it would work.

I feel the same......Rangey's been parked up for two weeks now and I've been using wifey's '03-plated Fezza to go to work in....it's warm, it's quick (well relatively speaking...it's only a 1400 Zetec), it handles like a rollerskate and it's got one of the best factory-fit stereos I've ever experienced....and it's entirely unmemorable to drive. Give me oldies or give me death

i drove the 02 plate work van for about 3 or 4 hours today. spent the entire time seeing how much chassis flex i could get in the sake of an interesting drive. and for the most part hammered it, at least it has more torque than the favorit lol

Yep, the Imps in our family get driven more than anything else. If they had rear seat belts, we'd probably use them all the time Mind you switching between a diesel Xantia and an Imp can melt your brain! Graham

I like my modern Mira and my old Charmant. The Mira has incredible acceleration and the grip level is just right, but the Charmant is torquey with nice weighted steering. Both of them reward careful driving, making the gear changes "just so" etc. The driving experience is in a way wildly different but much the same in a way.
Whereas my dad's 407SW diesel makes you feel like you're doing something wrong no matter when or how you do things, gear changes have a tendency to make you lurch forwards no matter how you do it, the brakes and steering are too over-assisted and although it accelerates pretty fast 0-30, it feels nothing like it due to far too much soundproofing. Not to mention it has absolutely enormous over-sized wheels and tyres which take away any sort of feedback you might have had with the road. As well as this, the suspension is the worst of both worlds, too wallowy to drive quickly yet if there's a little bump in the road it feels like you've just run over a breeze block. Hateful car.
