As in the title really.
I'm Just musing some ideas for the brakes on my Scirocco. At the moment I've got 280mm Golf G60 discs on the front, with the standard VWII calipers on them, but I've got plans to fit some 4-pots I've been offered dirt cheep on there. They'll need custom work to make them fit, so I can basically use whatever size discs I want, and in fact the bigger they are the easier the calipers will be to get on there (as long as they fit under my wheels).
I'm struggling to find anything much larger than my 280's though. Some Rover/MG's use 282's with a thicker disc and deeper bell than the VW ones, which could be handy as the deeper bell will give more clearance between the caliper and the back of the wheel's spokes, and the extra thickness should help them vent a little better. But they're the largest I've found with a 4x100 bolt pattern.
So does anyone know of anything larger?

If I can find it you can borrow my brake parts book which lists everything by dimension. Just flick through looking at stuff you know is 4x100 and it tells you bell depth and disc thickness and all.

Check out APEC braking, their website allows you to put in key dimensions and will show the options. Unfortunately pcd isn't an item you can search on but thickness, height, and centre bore are, which is a good help

In the vauxhall world the biggest discs are 288mm cav/vectra v6 discs BUT they`re 5 stud so we have to have them redrilled. Although I'm sure theres a dealer that sells them in 4 stud i`ll check if 288`s take your fancy? I'm sure they`re about 60 quid apair.

Apparently the old TSR 285mm kit used to use some sort of Rover discs I think, I've got a set of the adaptor plates, but not the discs, as I'm now just running 280mm spacer plates and G60 discs on my Mk1, the discs for the 285mm TSR kit were from Black Diamond, but I've never had any joy getting it out of them what they were originally from...

Ah, thanks ovimor, I'd forgoten that new Mini's are 4x100. They come in at the same thickness as mine (22mm) with 276, 294 and 316 sizes. Depending on what I can wedge under my wheels the 294 or 316s might work out well. A little thicker would be nice to suit the new calipers, but I can't see it being to much of an issue.
Good Scrap, thanks for that, I knew there was somewhere that'd let you search by size, shame you can't do stud pattern though!
James SV, yeah, the TSR kit had stuck in my head and using Rover discs of some sort, they must have been ~20mm thickness to work with the standard calipers unless the kit came with thinner pads too? Otherwise I'd expect they just used the 282's that I'd found and claimed them to be 285s.
Rich, Cheers, it may be some time until I've got the money to actually do anything, so being able to flick through a paper booklet might be nice. Don't waste too much time looking for it though, as I say, won't be for a while and I'm sure the web will come up with something before long. The MINI ones look good.

Gaz, yeah there seems to be some nice set-ups from within the VW range, and to be honest I'd be pretty ok with staying at 280mm but with the new engine in there it definitely needs some better calipers. I've been offered a set of rather nice calipers stupidly cheap, and the bigger I can go disc wise the easier they're going to be to mount.
Looks like Renault do a 300mm 4x100 disc on the Scenic which looks promising too depending on wheel clearance. Offset's slightly deeper than G60's and they're slightly thicker.
Annoyingly nothing useful seems to use as large centre-bore as VW, but at least that's easily opened up on a lathe.
Looks like between the MINI and Scenic discs I've got some good options there to try out once I get my wheels down from the seller. Now I just need to work out if I really want to restrict my self to 16" wheels, as being able to use 15's as track wheels in the future could be a pretty big bonus.

Yeah, I'm guessing the VR6 one's are probably way better than the VWII's I've got on mine, and would probably be fine. I want to really over-spec the chassis though, and I've been offered some Brembo 4 pots that measure up well for cheep, plus I quite fancy the challenge of making them fit.
I'm only running 150bhp at the moment, but the plans to get the suspension and brakes top notch while it's my daily, then when I've sorted out another diesel estate to run around in the Scirocco will become more of a toy and then it'll get track prepped and a lot more power.

Hm.. not quite 4x100 but I guess it's pretty close, they'd likely bolt up as I'm using M12 wheels bolts for now. (Quite fancy going over to M14 studs sometime though, just to be on the safe side, and because studs are clearly better.) They come in at 305mm and a whopping 28mm thick and a little deeper bells than mine. Worth considering, good thinking.

Thanks, yeah, a friend told me about the Cupra R set-up a minute ago. Sounds ideal but they seem to be very rare and expensive. I think I'm favoring the Renault ones at the moment, I can't imagine standard Scenic parts being expencive, and if Brembo's will fit under 16's on the 305mm ibiza discs, they should fit on the 300s easily enough.

Thanks Robin, that photo got me thinking, the venting type varies between the different makes, and it looks like between the MINI and Renault discs I've got a choice of where the air's taken from. It turns out the Brembo site also lets you search by size, but even better than that (in my eyes anyway) they show really well dimensioned technical drawings of everything they list, with a cut-away view showing the type of venting used. My current Golf G60 discs: The Renault discs: MINI 294mm discs: MINI 316mm discs: Fiat Coupe turbo discs: So it looks like I've got the option of the venting air being drawn in from the front or the back of the disc, or from the centre of the bell, as well as the various sizes. Plenty to think about, I've just got to work out which venting method I think will be most effective. Edit, Craig, if none of these fit the bill then I will look into re-drilling, but there seems to be a fair few options out there in 4x100, I'm sure I can get something to work. The next headache's going to be how I mount the calipers onto the hubs, I think anything under 320mm discs are going to need the calipers machining back a little to clear the original mounting lugs as they clash quite badly. I'm actually considering making new uprights for it, as it'd let me correct quite a few geometry issues as well as being able to mount the brakes with a lot less constraints.

Crikey those Brembo diagrams give incredible detail! Given what you've already gone through with the Scirocco I'm sure you've get these fitted pretty sharpish.
