if your going to spend a lot of money, the m5 estate (e34) is a right stormer, if you can stand the mpg. jaymcs have an RHD version in my eyes, the ultimate all round estate car is jakes e34 540i "shagon wagon". 300 bhp of pure unadulterated pleasure click for the shagon wagon at the nurburgring, hell yeah!I will repost this until I tire of watching it. ie. never ;D

That J engine bay design worries me. Legacy twin turbo and Subaru boxers - I bet they're both really time consuming to work on. Two hundred pipes to detach and reattach just to get at something tiny.
I have a thing for the Legacy GT estate but I'm scared of the possible issues, and they seem suspiciously cheap to me.
Thanks all for your suggestions. The 5 series BMW estates look cool. Can you find them with a manual box?

Legacy twin turbo and Subaru boxers - I bet they're both really time consuming to work on. Two hundred pipes to detach and reattach just to get at something tiny. I would reckon so too. I have been told that subaru mechanics drill large holes in impreza inner wings to make it easy to reach the plugs. that may be hogwash, but its something that I heard and found a little worrying. just imagine what else is an child born out of wedlock to get too! The 5 series BMW estates look cool. Can you find them with a manual box? the smaller engine ones upto a 525i are pretty easy to find as manuals. most big engined e34 estates are 530i's and manuals can take a bit of tracking down. jakes is a 530i auto, converted to 4 litre manual + some tinkering. watch out for nikasil problems if you get a v8 (more apparent on 3.0 bizzarely). also quite a few e34 bmw estates have self leveling rear suspension, which can be costly if the shocks are knackered. although m5 estates can have EDC, our non running one in the barn has. £600 a corner for shocks!!! twin sunroofs are rubbish too, get one with air-con. or forget the sunroof exists.

nikasil? Whassat on a BMW? Charlie some kinda problem that cacks up some of the engines in e34s but i'd still recommend one, a 24v vanos one (iirc) that wont get nikasil probs and is apparently the most reliable. well, get a 525SE with leather. mine doesnt have leather, but I do have a working twin roof go me. OR rover countryman. I'm sure that engine is ripe for it! OR legacys last forever. know people have 2 identical 2.2s (?) this years. faultless, and very often used as towing wagons for proper (pre '30) material. ^^DO THAT!^^

I know its moving away from the retro bubble but the next generation Passat V6 4Motion gives you an extra 12 valves and 4WD. Decent ones, good spec can be picked up very cheap. Or, for about £11K I have seen a W8 (yes thats a W) 4Motion estate, which is a Phaeton engined beasty.

For me sir, my fave fast estate has to be the stagea autech: awesome- skyline estate, which you could probarly fit your other skyline in the boot ;D BMW nikasil problem is to do with bore wear on alloy engines i believe. The earlier versions of certain engines can suffer from oval bores at a low mileage. Someone else will know more ;D

nikasil? Whassat on a BMW? Charlie nikasil is a chemical finish that is applied to the bore of alumium blocks. instead of the sensible idea of putting iron/steel liners in the block. it has cost bmw dearly, they go wrong quite a bit. the nikasil wears off (bmw said it was to do with the sulphur in the petrol, O RLY?) and the engine loses compresion on some of its cylinders, then one day it won't start. IIRC you're looking for an "s3" engine code for an iron liner engine. only applicable to 96/7 onwards cars or all bmw v8s unlees they've had a proper replacement engine.
