Rust & bushes are main thing on e36's. Nice car's though.

One thing I found is fairly common when I was researching these is for the bonnet catches to stick either so that the bonnet won't close or wont open.
Either way its a bit of a pain of a job to do, I know as ive just done it. You need to remove the kidney grills , front bumper, and fan unit just to gain access to the catches.
SRS light on is a common fault and most often caused by a failing passenger seat occupancy sensor, this can be readily sorted with a bypass kit.
Front lower control arms are a weak point. If the inner ball joint is gone you have to replace the whole arm, where as the outer can be pressed out. To be honest its easier to change the whole arm and if you do so E30 control arms are stronger and do fit.
If it hasn't been started for a while a bit of tapping on start up is normal but if that continues after the first few seconds or you get a marbles in the engine sound, then you've got problems in the engine.
Electric window mechanisms often fail on e36s check they work.
edit: I put ABS where I meant SRS now changed.

I bought a 328 manual coupe in Aug and I'm loving it. It really was cheap as chips, but it had a list of things that needed doing. So far I've done all the suspension top mount (fairly easy), fixed the passenger window mechanism (common fault, very fiddly but a satisfying fix) and most recently fitted a new thermostat (bit fiddly again). Next on the list is the handbrake shoes and mechanism on both sides, this is a common fault but needed before mot time. So far the parts have been cheap, labour costs are however much coffee I can drink. Running wise, mine averages 27-34mpg. My biggest issue is the insurance. I won't say what I pay, but I have 13years NCB, am 34yrs, yet the fully comp was more than what I paid for the car!
Other than that, I love mine to bits, best car I've had in ages, but cheap cars are only financially worth while if you are prepared to work on them yourself. I've spent enough time under the bonnet, that if I had shipped the what out, I'd have paid more than the car is worth.
Ta ta, Mark

I'm very tempted to get this. would be nice to go RWD again I thought that until I tried to drive it down the lanes to the farm last week. BMWs it appear do not like the combination of sheet ice on ungritted lanes, and steep hills.

The bushes went on mine.. The car was skipping side to side down the road. And then personally I felt like a tit when I had the top down..

I'm not a fan of how they're styled but that one looks much better with the removable hard top

Just changed the title for this. It seems the e36 is over looked by the e30. So let see some 36 love

Right now is the time to buy an E36 IMHO. They're now out of the 'chav mods', they're so damn affordable, good ones can be picked up for very little and I reckon they'll soon start rising (gradually) in price for tidy ones as the curse word ones get killed off and broken. A classic in the making? I think so. I'd have one....most likely a touring, probably a 2.5TDS, but they can look so nice whichever bodystyle you go for.

I had a manual 2.8i vert tuned to 230 bhp, intake, remap ect, lowered on bilstiens, wonderful car, virtually gave it away in the end, nice to work on lovely to drive, great noise, and such a cool roof. regarding the roof I had the semi automatic one, (turn release handle, then push dash button and it all folds away), the fully auto does away with the release handle, but adds an extra 4 or 5 microswitches, a worm gear and a load of hassle, so I's stick with the semi-auto, unless you want to fit a remote control kit, they look cool, but only work on the fully auto...
Mine managed mid/high 30's mpg on a normal fast motorway jaunt, and mid 20's in normal use, amazing for a heavy 2.8 car, even hooning it would stay in the teens, the auto boxes make the car into so much more of a cruiser, the big six needs a manual box to sing.....
Check for rust, and rear subframe bushes, siezed track rod adjusters, and get the best spec you can options are EVERYTHING on a BMW, as everything was optional, and you NEED leather in a 'vert, fabric just doesn’t work and looks naff..

I had an Aubergine purple E36 318ti compact with a cream interior It was really nice motor to drive, was reliable and relatively easy to work on. I changed the front pads & discs (which were pricey, even from a motor factor) and I had to change the bonnet latch. The rear arches go crusty, as do the front. Oh, and it split my head open when the boot dropped down, which I'll never forget I like the styling of the E36 but if I ever have another (which I would) I'd go for a touring. My Wife hated it though

Hey buddy. Cabrios always seem girly, even if M3, but it could work. I'm trying to imagine matte black with 5-series wheels (extra 15mm of poke) and some archery.

I really like mine, and miss not being able to drive it, its been laid up for over 18 months now needing a new engine due to Nikasil bore wear to cylinder two. Other than that it was great its a 328i sport couple auto. I habe coilovers sat in the boot waiting to go on as well as new RTAB bushes. Its atiny bit cripsy on one rear arch and the bottom of the drivers door.
